SIN: RamenPlay {CLOSED}

"It's time to play with your food!"

UPDATE (11/10/2019): The restaurant has closed down.

Why play? Read to find out more! Before I begin, actually the Sanpou Tonkatsu Ramen is said to be their specialty, but neither my friend nor I ordered that the other day. I shall save it for next time!

Treasure Umani Ramen S$12.80
Taste: 7.5/10

The Japanese word umani means meat and vegetables boiled in soy sauce which has been added with sugar. The ramen came with lots of ingredients such as pork, squid, prawns, mushrooms and vegetables which included bamboo shoots. I was glad the distinctive raw smell of bamboo shoots couldn't be detected. The broth was thick, but it wasn't rich enough. Pika's advice: 'Play' with your ramen by adding lots of garlic flakes if you like them! You can also find chili chives on your table, but I suppose they go better with rice dishes.

Unagi Toji Set S$14.80
Taste: 7.5/10

It took quite a while for the dish to appear, especially because the branch at Resort World Sentosa was filled to the brim during dinner time (and yes, the queue was hellishly long!). The unagi (Japanese freshwater eel) was grilled nicely, encased in soft and smooth eggs that went very well with the steamed rice. The miso (Japanese fermented rice, barley and/or soybean) soup that was included in the set was better than average.

Soft Shell Crab S$5.80
Taste: 7/10

I suppose $5.80 is an expensive price to pay for just one piece of soft shell crab, but since I was (and am still) looking for the best soft shell crab in the region, I closed one eye and ordered it nonetheless. There was nothing to shout about the crab. Even though the inside was pretty moist, the batter, which lacked crispiness, didn't manage to add to the complexity of the dish as a whole.

Calpis Juice with Strawberry Jelly S$4.80
Taste: 7/10

Sorry that the picture doesn't come out good. The interplay between the milky flavour and the acidic kick in the drink was great, although it would be better if it were a little bit more concentrated. The strawberry jelly was well-made.

Melon's Rating
Taste: 7/10
Ambience: 7/10
Service: 5.5/10
Overall: 6.5/10

As I said, service was slow because the place was so crowded. Having said that, the waitress serving us the other day was nice, and thus she at least passed the test.
