CHN: Mellow Orange Hotel [Breakfast]

Acceptable buffet breakfast, but no oranges! :P

I stayed only one night in Shenzhen, and Mellow Orange Hotel (3*) was my choice. It's located not very far away from Fanshen metro station. It's cheap, and it offers free LAN internet access.

The spread of the buffet breakfast, although not that awesome, was adequate.

Assorted Stuff #1

While the sweet potato didn't look that appetising, it was awesome with its sweet, honey-like flavour. The bun was equally great with its soft texture and eggy kaya jam on top of it. I also like the firm sweet cake (in front of the sweet potato) which I have no idea what it's called, but it's akin to Indonesian bolu panggang (Amoy seems to be one of the most famous brands). I always eat it by dunking it into a glass of tea or milk to make it moist. Hmm, can you spot you tiao (Chinese cruller) on the picture? Yes, there were two of them on the left side of the plate, and they tasted weird just like their appearance.

Assorted Stuff #2

The fried rice was average, and so were the cooked vegetable dishes; perhaps one of the better items was the cauliflower cooked with chicken luncheon meat. Oh, actually the food on the front left side of the plate was supposed to be for the congee (see below).

Pork and Century Egg Congee

While the congee was a bit watery, it tasted alright. There were quite a lot of minced pork, but not that many century eggs.

Fried Hor Fun

The fried hor fun (Chinese flat rice noodle) was pretty smooth and chewy, but it was seriously lacking in soy sauce. Also, it came only with a few vegetables.

Orange Juice, Tea and Soy Milk

Nothing much to say, but the soy milk tasted like plain water. You know I don't like soy milk, but I took a glass of it without reading the label, thinking that it was cow's milk haha...

Melon's Rating
Taste: 6/10
Ambience: 6/10
Overall: 6/10

I didn't take a picture of the fruits (only watermelon and pineapple slices were served), and I only ate one or two slices as they weren't that fresh. The dining area is small with only about 15 tables or so. As mentioned by the receptionist, buffet breakfast starts at 7.00am daily. However, when I came down at 7.30am that day, not all of the food had been served. Pika's advice: Be careful with the biscuits provided! The other day I noticed that a lot of them had passed the expiry date!
