PHI: Sunburst Fried Chicken

Crispy, crackling chicken skin!

Sunburst Fried Chicken isn't like your usual fast-food fix; in fact, it's a proper restaurant. Popular among Cebuanos, the eatery serves not only fried chickens, but also internal organs which are usually absent in most, if not all, fast food joints. Nope, I wasn't exactly in the mood to eat fried chickens the other day, but I did try something which many people have recommended: fried chicken skin!

Chick 'n Crackers with Potato Chips (Small) PHP 105.00 (~S$3.15)
Taste: 8.5/10

Sinful, yes, but the fried chicken skin (plus the potato chips) made a good appetiser. Coated with the thinnest batter imaginable, the moderately salted skin was delightful, packing so much crispy goodness. It came with a vinegar dip which wasn't too sour. Pika's advice: Don't forget to make the recommended dip by mixing the hot sauce, banana catsup and Worchestershire sauce available on the table!

Beef Ampalaya PHP 145.00 (~S$4.35)
Taste: 5.5/10

Well, I had no idea what ampalaya (lit. bitter gourd) was when I ordered the dish. Cooked in soy sauce, the somewhat tender and juicy beef managed to mask the bitterness of the bitter gourd. However, overall, the dish was too salty to be enjoyable.

Chicken a la King with Rice PHP 168.00 (~S$5.05)
Taste: 7.5/10

The stew-like dish had a pretty generous amount of chicken chunks, potatoes, carrots, mushrooms and scallions. The cream sauce was pretty thick and enjoyable at first, but it grew a bit monotonous towards the end. Well, most importantly, it wasn't overcooked.

Garlic Rice (Mould) PHP 30.00 (~S$0.90)
Taste: 7/10

The rice was a tad soft, but the garlic taste was pretty strong.

Leche Flan PHP 48.00 (~S$1.45)
Taste: 4/10

The badly overcooked custard cake was, at the very least, adequately sweet, although the taste of the caramel was a bit weird. Actually, was it really caramel? Anyway, I guess it's time to reveal to you that as long as I could bring myself to finish a particular dish, I'd never give it below 4/10.

Melon's Rating
Taste: 6.5/10
Ambience: 7.5/10
Service: 7.5/10
Overall: 7/10

Perhaps I'll be back to get the ever-popular fried chicken skin, as well as to try the fried chickens.
