MAS: Jasmine Café

One of the best chicken chops I've ever eaten!

Big on Dutch football, Jasmine Café has been around since the 1990s. Just like how the national team is dressed in orange, the characteristic colour of the café is orange. It serves not only Western food, but also Chinese cuisine.

Kueh Teow Soup RM 7.00 (~S$2.85)
Taste: 7/10

The first Chinese dish ordered didn't manage to impress me. The thin, flat noodle was pretty chewy, but the soup was just a bit sweet without being full-bodied. It was served with chewy fish cakes, shredded chicken meat, lettuce and beansprouts, topped with fried shallots for added taste.

Ginger Chicken (Small) RM 8.00 (~S$3.25)
Taste: 7.5/10

The chicken chunks in the second Chinese dish ordered were pretty tender, although they could be juicier. While the sauce was pretty tasty, I believe they could be more liberal with the use of ginger slices to make the dish hotter and more aromatic.

For the western cuisine shown below, on top of the price paid for the main course, I topped up RM 7.00 to make it a Combination Set which comes with a bowl of mushroom soup and a choice of coffee, tea or ice cream.

Mushroom Soup (Set Menu)
Taste: 4.5/10

The mushroom soup was dull and uninspiring. It wasn't only somewhat watery, but also lacking in the flavour I was anticipating. Also, there were only very few bits of mushrooms swimming inside. The only saving grace was the fact that it was served warm to beat the chill of the night.

Chicken Chop RM 16.00 (~S$6.50) (Set Menu)
Taste: 9/10

I've heard that the café is famous for its chicken chop. Although I'm not a big fan of one, I just had to try it, and I wasn't disappointed at all. The meat was juicy and tender with a slightly crispy layer of skin, complemented well in taste by the clean sweetness of the brown sauce. While the vegetables were pretty fresh, it was a pity that the french fries weren't fried to perfection.

Ice Cream (Set Menu)
Taste: 7.5/10

Eating ice cream in such a cold weather wasn't a bad idea after all. The vanilla ice cream was adequately creamy, but it wasn't special.

Melon's Rating
Taste: 7/10
Ambience: 7.5/10
Service: 7/10
Overall: 7/10

I'm not aware of the opening hours of the café, but I've heard that it'll run till late, especially during the football league seasons. Pika's advice: I've just found out that some people think that smoked duck dish served by the café is yummy. You may want to give it a try!
