HKG: Wing Wah Bakery (榮華餅家)

A set of wife cakes with four different flavours!

Hello, February! Before I finally go back to write about Singapore eateries, let me finish off the HK-Macau food trip with lao po bing (lit. wife cake). Wing Wah Bakery's history dates back to 1950 at one small corner in Yuen Long, a neighbourhood where the famous competitor - Hang Heung Bakery - is. I didn't go to Yuen Long last December, but I bought the cakes from the airport branch while waiting to board the flight SQ861 back to Singapore.

Wing Wah Assorted Wife Cake Gift Set A HK$85.00 (~S$14.85)
Taste: 8.5/10

If I'm not mistaken, there are three gift sets available: A, B and C. Each contains eight pieces of wife cakes with four different flavours. Pika's advice: Should you wish to have wife cakes with reduced sugar, do get their Set C, which is slightly more expensive.

Wife Cake with Wintermelon Paste
Taste: 7.5/10

First of all, I'd like to note that the wife cake was just a little bit flaky without being buttery enough. Still, it was pretty nice to chew. The winter melon paste was a little bit gummy, and not overly sweet.

Wife Cake with White Lotus Seed Paste
Taste: 6.5/10

The white lotus seed paste happened to be more solid. It really tasted like those found in generic mooncakes. Just a tad too sweet for my liking, I must say.

Wife Cake with Red Bean Paste
Taste: 8/10

Out of the four, the red bean paste was the winner. Sweet and salty enough, it was slightly coarse without being sticky on the teeth.

Wife Cake with Green Tea Paste
Taste: 7.5/10

The green tea paste was faintly aromatic, but it was better than nothing. It was somewhat gummy as well, and not overly sweet.

Melon's Rating
Taste: 7.5/10

As some of you may have known or read from my blog, the bakery also owns a restaurant in Yuen Long. Check out the review here. Thanks again, HK! I'll be back for sure, hopefully soon! :)
