SIN: Ippudo

Motto: "To continuously innovate to remain true"

Ippudo was founded in 1985 in Hakata, Japan. One fine afternoon on my mom's birthday, I brought her for a lunch. We happened to be in the west that day, so I brought her to Ippudo at Westgate as she likes ramen. During lunch time, you can have the Lunch Set Menu with a top-up of S$5.00 to your ramen order in order to enjoy one side dish and one drink.

Spicy Black Ramen S$16.00
Taste: 8.5/10

My choice for the day was the ramen with original tonkotsu (lit. pork bone) ramen with chili oil and a dollop of miso (Japanese fermented rice, barley and/or soybean) mixed with spicy minced meat. The resulting soup was rich, giving quite a kick on the tongue, but not prohibitively hot. For the hardness of noodle, I went for the third level and was truly pleased.

Chashu Rice (Set Menu)
Taste: 8/10

For my side dish, I went for the pork belly rice, which turned out to be pretty addictive. The flavoured, well-cooked Japanese rice met the red meat that had an adequate amount of fats. It was topped with chopped spring onions, sesame seeds and crispy seaweed.

Bonito Tonkotsu Set S$15.00
Taste: 8/10

My mom's selection was equally mouth-watering, but she requested her noodle to be soft. The smoked bonito flakes added another layer of taste and aroma to the dish instead of ruining the broth. At this point, I should also mention that the pork belly in both bowls was tender.

Mini Karaage (Set Menu)
Taste: 7/10

As mom only took one piece, I got to eat the other. The deep-fried chicken was a bit on the oily side, but the white meat was quite tender. Don't you love how simple ingredients, such as cherry tomato, lemon slice and lettuce, add colours and make something look more palatable?

Cranberry Juice (Set Menu)

Mom and I went for a glass of cold cranberry juice each.

Melon's Rating
Taste: 8/10
Ambience: 7/10
Service: 7.5/10
Overall: 7.5/10

As one of the internationally renowned brandname with over 80 stores in Japan and another 40 overseas, Ippudo serves delectable ramen indeed. Pika's advice: There are quite a few branches across the island, where each of them has a different menu. The website has downloadable PDF menu of some of the branches.
