SIN: Tendon Kohaku

The most popular 'tendon' place in Singapore?

Situated on the third floor of Suntec City Mall is Eat @ Seven, a Japanese dining concept that houses seven eateries. A long queue is usually seen at one of them, namely Tendon Kohaku. Who could resist neatly arranged tempura (Japanese battered and deep-fried assortments) on a bed of rice?

For a complete experience, I chose the Kohaku Tendon Set, which is priced at S$19.50.

Tendon (Set Menu)
Taste: 8.5/10

Battered chicken, fish, crab stick, prawns and vegetables, such as long beans, corn and mushroom, were drizzled with sauce that was delightfully sweet. For the rice, you get to choose between Nanatsuboshi Hokkaido rice or that mixed with Hakubaku rice, which is a mix of sixteen grains. I went for the latter. Well, what a bowl of goodness!

Udon (Set Menu)
Taste: 8.5/10

The somewhat thin udon (Japanese wheat-flour noodle) was delectably chewy, going down the throat easily. It was topped with fish cake, spring onions and tenkasu, i.e. crunchy tempura bits. The broth exuded such an appetising smoky aroma from dried bonito.

Pickled Radish

I really enjoyed the pickled radish that can be found at every table. Each slice of the root vegetable was refreshingly sweet and sour, made aromatic with finely chopped yuzu (a species of aromatic Asiatic citron).

Melon's Rating
Taste: 8.5/10
Ambience: 5/10
Service: 7.5/10
Overall: 7/10

I'm so happy that there's now a branch at Chinatown Point, which is a stone's throw away from home. Pika's advice: For those who don't eat meat, the eatery offers rice bowls with vegetable tempura only.
