GUY: New Thriving

Legit Chinese dishes in Guyana, save for one...

The Chinese community has been playing a pivotal role in Guyana since it was occupied by the British. In fact, the first president after its independence, Arthur Chung, was a Chinese. There are quite a number of Chinese restaurants in Georgetown, one of which is the more upscale New Thriving located at Main Street.

Not surprisingly, the restaurant employs some Chinese staff who can speak Mandarin to attend to visitors who prefer to converse in the language.

New Thriving Hot and Sour Soup GY$648 (~S$5.20)
Taste: 7.5/10

The hot and sour soup, having vivid colours, came to the table piping hot. Even though it wasn't really spicy, I enjoyed its sweet and sour balance, along with the fact that it had a thick consistency. There was an adequate amount of glass noodle inside, which was a delight to slurp.

Fried Wanton (Small) GY$900 (~S$5.90)
Taste: 8/10

One dish that I really had to put into the acid test was the deep-fried dumplings. I believe the filling was made of minced chicken and pork, glued together with sesame oil. It was a delight to have those dumplings that had crispy skin with some sweet and sour sauce (not shown) provided on the table.

Black Bean Pork Ribs GY$1,500 (~S$9.80)
Taste: 4.5/10

Unfortunately, the pork ribs were rather disappointing. First of all, many of the pieces of meat were too fatty for my liking. The black bean sauce was too wet, even though the flavour was alright. While I wasn't complaining, it was rather weird to see that the dish was topped with chopped garlic.

Noodle with Three Ingredients (Small) GY$2,000 (~S$13.05)
Taste: 8.5/10

The noodle dish might look deceptively simple, but it was full of flavours. The homemade noodle was pretty springy, stir-fried with chicken, carrot strips and spring onions. I appreciated the fact that while it wasn't greasy, it had that smoky aroma that came from the blazing hot wok.

Melon's Rating
Taste: 7/10
Ambience: 6.5/10
Service: 5/10
Overall: 6/10

While the staff tried to be professional, service was painfully slow. To make matters worse, one of them forgot to inform me that one of the dishes that I'd ordered earlier wasn't available. Besides that, the air-conditioning system didn't seem to be that well. Pika's advice: Though I'm not sure of the details, you may want to consider the restaurant's a la carte buffet. Also, there's a bakery near the entrance.
