SIN: Tenkaichi

Grilled sea bream topped with lots of cod roe mayonnaise, but...

Tenkaichi is a Japanese restaurant brand that specialises in BBQ. At the point of writing, there are two branches: Marina Square and Cineleisure Orchard. I went to the former with my friend one fine afternoon not for the BBQ, but for the Set Menu that come with free-flow side dishes.

Let's take a look at the main dishes first, each served with rice, miso (Japanese fermented rice, barley and/or soybean) soup, chawanmushi (Japanese egg custard) and a beverage of choice.

Yakitori and Kaki Fry Set S$17.90
Yakitori - Taste: 7.5/10
Kaki Fry - Taste: 6.5/10

The chicken skewers were adequately tender with an adequate amount of glaze made of soy sauce and sugar. The deep-fried breaded oysters tasted alright, but they could be moister.

Tai Mentai Yaki and Ebi Fry Set S$18.90
Tai Mentai Yaki - Taste: 4.5/10
Ebi Fry Taste: 7.5/10

Even though the grilled sea bream came with a generous amount of savoury cod roe mayonnaise, it was a pity that the fish was rather burnt, resulting in a bitter taste. The deep-fried breaded prawns, on the other hand, were quite succulent.

Rice, Miso Soup & Chawanmushi (Set Menu)
Miso Soup - Taste: 6.5/10
Chawanmushi Taste: 7.5/10

The miso soup contained lots of tofu cubes, although it could definitely make use of a bit more miso paste. The Japanese egg custard was smooth enough for my liking. Topped with a slice of fish cake, it came with a bit of chicken and mushroom slices.

Green Tea (Set Menu)

Common soft drinks are available, but I opted for cold unsweetened green tea in a bid to reduce sugar consumption.

Assorted Stuff #1 (Buffet)

While waiting for my main course to come, I took some items from the cold section of the buffet table. To me, the best item on the plate was the cold Japanese spinach topped with sesame seeds. None of the sushi (Japanese hand-knead vinegared rice served with various ingredients) came with seafood, save for crab sticks.

Assorted Stuff #2 (Buffet)

After the main course had arrived, I went to grab some items from the hot section of the buffet table for additional side dishes. The stir-fried broccoli with prawns was quite worth it. The rest of the items was passable, but I need to mention that the deep-fried squid was rather rubbery.

Watermelon & Honeydew (Buffet)

For a balanced meal, I had some watermelon cubes that were luscious. The honeydew, however, was neither juicy nor sweet.

Melon's Rating
Taste: 6.5/10
Ambience: 7/10
Service: 7/10
Overall: 6.5/10

The branch at Cineleisure Orchard has just opened this year. Pika's advice: Do note that there's a 20% discount for the Set Menu on weekdays during lunch hours.
