UGA: Endiro Coffee

"Brewing a Better World!"

Endiro is a Lugandan word that refers to a place where family and friends gather for meal and conversation. Since its founding in 2011, Endiro Coffee in Uganda has not only served food and beverages to its customers, but also supported a wide array of compassionate causes and transformation projects aimed at creating a better world.

In addition to a few branches in the country, there's one in New York, the USA.

Sweet and Salty Gonja Chips UGX 10,000 (~S$3.60)
Taste: 8.5/10

Gonja is a variety of plantains that's unique to Uganda. Having a delightful texture that was neither too soft nor too hard, the naturally sweet banana slices were fried and seasoned with a bit of salt. They came with a small saucer of local honey, but I found it to be unnecessary given how delicious they already were.

Roasted Half Chicken UGX 30,000 (~S$10.85)
Taste: 7.5/10

My BFF and I ordered a tilapia main course with rice as a side dish at first, but we were told by the chef that the remaining fish didn't seem fresh. As such, we tried the roasted half chicken that was seasoned with herbs and spices, which turned out to be moist enough. The brown sauce didn't really taste good to me, so I gave it a miss.

Bukalasi BBQ Pork Ribs UGX 34,000 (~S$12.30)
Taste: 6.5/10

Looking at the menu booklet that mentions "a generous helping of pork spare ribs", I was anticipating a big main course to satisfy my hunger. Alas, the ribs weren't that meaty, although they were tender. They were slathered with BBQ sauce infused with Bukalasi coffee, which was anything but special. The salad was adequately fresh.

Mbale Frappe UGX 14,000 (~S$5.05)
Taste: 8/10

As if I hadn't had enough bananas, I ordered a chilled banana-infused espresso, which was blended with milk and vanilla ice cream. Topped with whipped cream, the coffee was aromatic without being overly sweet. I could certainly detect the fragrance of bananas, although it could be more heady.

Melon's Rating
Taste: 7.5/10
Ambience: 7.5/10
Service: 8.5/10
Overall: 8/10

The restaurant is open from 7.00am daily. It serves breakfast menu till 11.00am. Pika's advice: For breakfast, you may want to try Ugandan specialty of omelette and vegetables wrapped in chapati called rolex.
