SIN: House of Seafood

How good is the award-winning black pepper crab?

I've known the existence of House of Seafood for quite some time, though it was only recently that I went all the way to Punggol Settlement for the very first time. There's another branch at Petaling Jaya's 1 Utama Shopping Centre, which is the largest shopping mall in Malaysia.

We skipped the prawns crackers and the pickled appetiser dish. To my knowledge, each costs S$2.00. A piece of wet wipe is chargeable at S$0.30.

Signature Pork Ribs with Chef's Special Sauce (Small) S$18.00
Taste: 5.5/10

Despite it specialising in seafood dishes, the restaurant is known for its signature pork ribs. Topped with white sesame seeds, they were coated in a secret mix that was enjoyably sweet - most likely due to honey. However, the meat wasn't that moist, even though it was acceptably tender.

Salad Prawns (Small) S$22.00
Taste: 8/10

Placed atop a crispy nest were prawns that'd been coated with a thin layer of flour before being deep-fried well to retain their bouncy texture. They were then smothered in golden-coloured sauce that were sweet and savoury, and eventually finished with some sprinkles of black sesame seeds.

Black Pepper Crab Seasonal Price
Taste: 8/10

The crabs were priced at per S$65.00 kg that day, thus my 900 g black pepper crab cost me S$58.50. I had no complaints about the crustacean meat as it was fresh and pretty sweet. The black pepper sauce was thick and tasty enough for my liking, though I was hoping that it'd be spicier.

House Specialty Indonesia Fried Rice (Medium) S$14.00
Taste: 7/10

I was quite intrigued by the purported Indonesian fried rice, which came with shrimps, eggs and green peas, so I decided to give it a try. It wasn't cooked with kecap manis (Indonesian sweet soy sauce), but it tasted pretty good, thanks to the generous amount of hae bee hiam (Peranakan spicy dried shrimps).

Mango Pudding S$5.00
Taste: 7.5/10

I wasn't expecting a unique presentation of a glass bowl of mango pudding sitting on another glass containing containing green-coloured water. Studded with mango cubes that were pretty sweet, the pudding was milky enough for my liking. I've had creamier and more vibrant ones elsewhere though.
