TRY: Balik Ekmek Street Vendor @ Karakoy

Drawn by the aroma of grilled mackerel sandwich~

Balik ekmek (lit. fish bread) is Turkey's answer to street food. According to my sister, the government has unfortunately pretty much clamped down on street vendors selling those aromatic fish sandwiches. We happened to spot a street vendor near Karakoy Ferry Terminal on our way to the renowned Karakoy Gulluoglu.

Balik Ekmek ₺12.00 (~S$2.75)
Taste: 8/10

Served in a lightly grilled bun was a grilled mackerel fillet that was fresh and flaky. It was seasoned with a bit of salt, red pepper flakes and lemon juice before being topped with a bit of mayonnaise. Accompanying the fish were some lettuce and onions that were pretty sweet.

It was only on my third visit to Istanbul that I got to try it. Pika's advice: The queue can be rather disorganised. As soon as you've stood near the vendor, catch his eyes and tell him how many you want.
