CAN: The Maple Leaf

Delectable spiced French toast and honey wine!

The Maple Leaf is a bistro offering a warm, elegant log cabin interior that's located at the busiest corner of Banff Avenue. Chef Pascal McKillican uses local ingredients to seduce your taste buds. My BFF and I went there for brunch after admiring the exhibits at Banff Park Museum National Historic Site.

We ordered two dishes and two drinks.

Beer-Battered Halibut and Chips (2 pcs) C$25.00 (~S$26.00)
Taste: 5.5/10

My BFF was eyeing on the fish and chips, which turned out to be somewhat disappointing. While the halibut was pretty fresh, it wasn't rather dry. Having said that, the homemade tartar sauce was delightfully tangy. The fries weren't that crispy, but not soggy either.

Spiced Canadian French Toast C$17.00 (~S$17.70)
Taste: 9/10

I love my choice of brunch dish, featuring aromatic and moist French toast dusted with castor sugar. Each piece was full of the goodness of cinnamon, going well with pure maple syrup and whipped cream. Besides candied pumpkin seeds and berries, there were double smoked bacon strips that were tasty.

Organic Citrus Flower Oolong Tea C$4.50 (~S$4.70)
Taste: 8/10

As a non-coffee person, my BFF went for one of the variations of Natur'el Tea produced locally in Banff. The oolong tea leaves mixed with jasmine blossoms, lemon myrtles and essential oils from citrus fruits created a light and fragrant brew that helped to wash down the fats from the two dishes we had earlier.

Honey Wine (3 oz) C$7.00 (~S$7.30)
Taste: 9/10

I rarely have wine in the afternoon, but I just couldn't resist the temptation of honey wine produced by Spirit Hills, a family-run winery at the foothills of the Rocky Mountains near Calgary. Having such a beautiful orange colour, the semi-sweet wine, which was also infused with rose oil, was addictively fragrant.

Melon's Rating
Taste: 8/10
Ambience: 8.5/10
Service: 8/10
Overall: 8/10

The brunch dishes are available daily till from the time the bistro opens till 1.00pm. Pika's advice: We saw a number of patrons ordering the seemingly appetising Jalapeno Maple Duck Wings. You may want to consider this particular dish that's priced at C$18.00 (~S$18.75).
