PHI: Bacolod Chicken Inasal

Chicken on a skewer, but not yakitori!

Chicken inasal is a type of roasted chicken served on a skewer that originated in the Visayas region. Well, the best way to savour its true taste is to go to Bacolod City. However, since I didn't have the time to travel all the way there, I had to be content with what the restaurant chain, which was founded in 1993, offered.

Crispy Crablets (Original) PHP 115.00 (~S$3.45)
Taste: 8/10

I couldn't resist the temptation of the deep-fried small crabs which were crunchy, but not overly so, on the outside, but moist on the inside. Simply, lightly seasoned with salt and pepper, they were a delight to have with the calamansi, chili and other stuff (such as soy sauce) provided on the side.

I ordered the Set Meal priced at PHP 199.00 (~S$6.00) comprising inasal, eggplant salad, garlic rice, buko pandan and regular Nestea. Pika's advice: Do tell the staff whether you prefer petso (breast with wing) or paa (thigh and leg).

Chicken Inasal, Eggplant Salad & Garlic Rice (Set Menu)
Taste: 7.5/10

Marinated in a combination of ingredients such as brown sugar, vinegar, lemon juice, lemongrass, ginger and garlic, the chicken was tender and somewhat flavourful. The problem lied in the fact that the flavours didn't penetrate into the deep layers of the meat. Also, it'd be better if it could be roasted a little bit longer to bring about further caramelisation. The eggplant salad could be a bit sourer in my opinion, but it was pretty fresh. On the other hand, the garlic rice was quite nice and fluffy.

Buko Pandan (Set Menu)
Taste: 7.5/10

The dessert was a combination of buko (lit. young coconut) strips and green gelatin cubes made of pandan leaves which had a slightly chewy texture, but it was a pity that the aroma wasn't that strong. They were nonetheless refreshing, served in not-so-sweet cream which wasn't heavy.

Nestea (Regular) (Set Menu)

Just your usual Iced Tea. No descriptions necessary, yea?

Melon's Rating
Taste: 7.5/10
Ambience: 6.5/10
Service: 6/10
Overall: 6.5/10

While the food came promptly, I found that some of the staff were kinda taciturn, not to mention that they weren't fully attentive even though the restaurant wasn't crowded that afternoon.
