CAN: Cathay Pacific Lounge @ Vancouver International Airport

Raise your hand if you love briny egg noodle! Cathay Pacific operates an airport lounge at Vancouver International Airport adjacent to Gate 67 of the International Departure area, offering "a tranquil haven complemented by scenic mountain views". Prior to our morning flight to Hong Kong, my BFF and I made it a point to have breakfast at the lounge.

Didn't expect to have my first plant-based meat there! Tim Hortons is Canada's largest quick service restaurant chain, which was founded in 1964. Having its headquarter in Toronto, it had a total of 4,846 branches across 14 countries as of 31 December 2018. My BFF and I had our last dinner in Canada at its CF Richmond Centre branch.

Dijon mustard played an important role for dinner! It felt like it was only a moment ago that my BFF and I had our lunch. As we'd be alighting at Jasper, we were advised to have our dinner from 5.30pm to 6.30pm, and we did. Even though we weren't hungry, we were really satisfied with the dishes offered for dinner.

I'd vouch for the rich chocolate brownie at the end of the meal! The hours of the morning passed by quickly. When the call for the second seating for lunch was made, my BFF and I made our way to the dining car. Prior reservation is required for lunch and dinner to avoid queues and allow for leisurely meal time for each seating.

Fragrant banana pecan pancakes with pure maple syrup! The highlight of my adventure in Canada was the train ride from Vancouver to Jasper onboard The Canadian that took approximately 20 hours. My BFF and I booked upper and lower berth seats in the Sleeper Plus Class cabin. I believe there are usually two meals served on the Vancouver-Jasper route: dinner and breakfast.

Do you prefer candied or smoked salmon jerky? To some of us, candied salmon may sound strange. Before trying it, I was also skeptical about how it'd taste like. Curiosity killed the cat, but satisfaction brought it back after buying some from Longliner Seafoods, one of the original tenants of Granville Island Public Market since its opening in 1979.

Overlooking the scenic Vancouver waterfront, Miku has been attracting a huge crowd of locals and foreigners alike since its inception in 2008. Virgin experience with cheese and jalapeno bagel! Samesun Vancouver (3*) is a vibrant hostel offering bunk beds and private rooms, where my BFF and I stayed for 3D2N before we left for Jasper by train. Simple buffet breakfast is served daily at the hostel, though only for two hours starting from 7.30am, which some may consider rather late.

Before taking a bus from Lonsdale Quay to go to the park, we had a fulfilling lunch at Sharky's Chophouse, a highly rated butcher shop serving value-for-money meals.

Phnom Penh Restaurant is a renowned Cambodian-Vietnamese eatery in Vancouver, Canada that has bagged multiple recognitions from the annual Golden Plates awards. The restaurant even gives a heads-up in the website to "expect a long wait, followed by a fantastic meal".

Owned by Noriki Tamura and his wife who moved from Japan to Vancouver, Canada in 2005, Japadog had its humble beginning as a roadside stand specialising in hot dogs with Japanese flavours. Fast forward to now, there are multiple hot dog carts and a store in Metro Vancouver.

At the point of writing, Salmon n' Bannock is the only restaurant specialising in indigenous cuisine in Vancouver. Despite the modern touch in its dishes, it sticks to using traditional ingredients from First Nations-run businesses.

I've been to awesome night markets in Taiwan, but I still made it a point to drop by the largest night market in North America that operates only during summer.

Not a single visit to Japan without 'ekiben'! A portmanteau of eki (lit. station) and bento (Japanese meal box), ekiben  has long been an icon of Japanese culinary culture. I know the meal boxes are served at room temperature, but I'm always drawn to them, thanks in part to their exquisite presentation. My family bought some from Ekiben Tabi Bento situated within Kyoto station to savour them for lunch, not inside a train, but in the comfort of our hotel room.
