SIN: Yoshinoya
Trying it again in Singapore after years!
Yoshinoya is the second largest chain of gyudon (lit. beef bowl) restaurants in Japan. Although its first shop opened in Tokyo, the name of the chain actually pays homage to the former town of Yoshino in Osaka Prefecture where its founder hailed from. After years of giving Yoshinoya in Singapore a miss, I recently found myself revisiting one of its branches at Bugis Junction.
Combo Beef and Salmon Rice S$11.90
Taste: 7.5/10
The menu has evolved since my last visit back when I was a student. I decided to go for the classic beef bowl accompanied with a fried salmon medallion.
Though not life-changing, the quality of the beef bowl has noticeably improved. The beef slices stir-fried with onions were tender, though a touch more marinade would enhance the flavour further. Topped with a dollop of tartar sauce, the salmon medallion was pretty enjoyable, though the interior could be more succulent. The bowl came complete with a serving of rice and salad.
Drink + Dessert Set S$4.00
Taste: 7/10
For an additional $4.00, you get free-flowing soft drinks from the self-service machine or Ito-En Japanese green tea, as well as a small dessert item. A piece of chocolate brownie topped with chopped walnuts was served that day, which was quite chocolatey.
The Japanese curry rice with breaded chicken cutlet, however, didn't actually hit the mark. While the delivered a pleasant crunch, the chicken turned out to be rather dry. Whiel the curry was thick enough for my liking, it would be nice to have a side of pickled red ginger to add a refreshing contrast.

Ambience: 6/10
Overall: 6/10
Now that we have Sukiya in addition to Yoshinoya in Singapore, it remains to be seen if Matsuya will ever make its way here. Pika's advice: Take note that some of the combo items are not available at their Junction 8 and Star Vista outlets.
