SIN: Sarai Fine Thai

Image
Affordable crab meat curry that pleased the taste buds! Here's the last post for 2025 as the year gently draws to a close, hopefully filled with moments of peace and comfort for all of us. Formerly known as Patara Fine Thai Cuisine, which had been a stalwart at Tanglin Mall since its opening in 1995, Sarai Fine Thai emerged in 2019 after a thoughtful renovation and rebranding.

SIN: I'm Kim Korean BBQ

Image
Affordable Korean BBQ buffet with a good spread! Located at School of the Arts near Dhoby Ghaut, Bencoolen and Bras Basah MRT stations, I'm Kim Korean BBQ has been a popular go-to spot for affordable Korean BBQ buffet since its establishment in 2014. Don't forget to grab at least one friend as the restaurant requires a minimum of two paying diners.

SIN: Bar-Roque Grill

Image
My introduction to French style ravioli! Bar-Roque Grill brings a taste of France with a menu deeply rooted in Chef Stéphane's cherished memories of his home in Alsace. The restaurant at Tanjong Pagar takes pride in sourcing their beef from O'Connor farms in Gippsland in the southeastern part of Australia, and dry-aging their cuts in-house.

SIN: Mid-Autumn 2025 Mooncakes @ White Rabbit

Image
When childhood candy dreams hop into mooncake reality! As the Mid-Autumn Festival approaches on 6 October, it's time once again for the annual tradition of this blog: delving into a selection of mooncakes. While snowskin varieties have often taken the spotlight, I'm turning to the baked classics this time round, and what better way to do so with something that stirs up childhood nostalgia: the beloved White Rabbit brand!

SIN: Marks & Spencer

Image
Virgin experience with cheesy hot cross buns! Blessed Easter Sunday! It's a cherished tradition of mine to indulge in hot cross buns for the occasion every year. This year, I bought some from Marks & Spencer, a British multinational retailer founded by Michael Marks and Thomas Spencer in 1884. Also included in this blog post are a few other treats from the store.

SIN: SERVUS German Burger Grill

Image
Not wow-ed by its beef burgers though... Born in Germany, Hans im Glück (lit. Hans in Luck) is a burger chain named after a fairytale recorded by the Brothers Grimm. Known for its forest-inspired decor, the outlets create a cozy, rustic atmosphere. Here in Singapore, it's been rebranded as SERVUS German Burger Grill and it can be found at VivoCity.

SIN: Yan Restaurant

Image
Cantonese cuisine not quite as outstanding as expected... Housed within the National Gallery in the Civic District of Singapore, Yan blends classic Cantonese recipes with modern culinary innovation. Its menu showcases a balance of tradition and creativity, from roasted meat to hand-crafted dim sum . The restaurant is part of the AMEX Love Dining programme.

SIN: Kith Café

Image
The best espresso jelly I've ever had! Starting as a humble shop by the river at Robertson Quay in 2009. Kith Café has since expanded to no less than ten outlets across the island. The founder is a firm believer in feng shui (Chinese geomancy), seen in the cafe's logo with auspicious elements: 18 black and 18 yellow spaces arranged in an octagonal shape, symbolising prosperity and success.

SIN: Yoshinoya

Image
Trying it again in Singapore after years! Yoshinoya is the second largest chain of gyudon (lit. beef bowl) restaurants in Japan. Although its first shop opened in Tokyo, the name of the chain actually pays homage to the former town of Yoshino in Osaka Prefecture where its founder hailed from. After years of giving Yoshinoya in Singapore a miss, I recently found myself revisiting one of its branches at Bugis Junction.

SIN: L'Entrecôte

Image
Are you a fan of their rich specialty sauce? Entrecôte  is a French term that refers to a premium boneless cut of beef from the rib area, which is typically used for steaks and roasts. L'Entrecôte, a restaurant dedicated to this cut, features it as the one and only main course. One of the branches is located at Customs House, which was among the earliest public buildings in modern Singapore.

SIN: Mid-Autumn 2024 Mooncakes @ Luna

Image
'Tie guan yin' and lychee are besties! Welcome to this year's edition of our Mid-Autumn mooncake post! With just a week to go until Mid-Autumn Festival 2024, let's take a look at some pretty duo-tone snowskin mooncakes offered by Luna, a proud local patisserie that made its debut at the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic in March 2020.

SIN: Ohayo Mama San

Image
Frequent offer: 50% off Japanese high tea! Describing itself as a gastrobar, Ohayo Mama San at 313@Somerset serves a delightful array Japanese and fusion dishes in a brightly lit setting with predominantly blue and orange tones. While I'd been there twice for dinner, particularly intrigued by its cocktail selections, I recently decided to try its Japanese high tea offering with a friend.

SIN: Restaurant PeraMakan

Image
Let's 'makan' (lit. eat) at PeraMakan! A play on the word Peranakan, Restaurant PeraMakan near Farrer Park MRT station takes diners on a culinary journey through fusion dishes born from the intermingling of Chinese, Malay and Indonesian cultures. The brand was founded in 2004 by Kathryn Ho, a fourth generation Nyonya of Malacca and Penang parentage.

SIN: GOPIZZA

Image
Yummy pizza, but too sweet a spaghetti dish... Born as a food truck store in Seoul's Yeouido Night Goblin Market in 2016, GOPIZZA rapidly expanded to 30 pop-up stores at top department stores across South Korea within half a year. Today, it has surpassed 100 outlets in four countries. I found myself compelled to try its offerings when I was at Suntec City Mall.

SIN: Biseryu {CLOSED}

Image
Legit 'gyukatsu' in Singapore! UPDATE (11/01/2024):  The restaurant has closed down. I'd consider Biseryu in Far East Plaza at Orchard a hidden gem, a small restaurant showcasing dishes curated from eight distinct concept restaurants in Japan, such as ox tongue from Senri and fried chicken from Karamasa. What draws me to the establishment, however, is the premium gyukatsu : beef cutlet that's not so commonly found in Singapore.

SIN: Mid-Autumn 2023 Mooncakes @ Janice Wong

Image
Lavender apricot for the win! Happy birthday to Pikachu! With Mid-Autumn Festival on the horizon, and Melon's birthday in exactly two weeks' time, it's customary for the two of them to celebrate with mooncakes. This year, we shall look at the snowskin mooncakes from the sweets boutique by Janice Wong, a Singaporean chef, chocolatier and artist.

SIN: Thai Tantric Restaurant

Image
Go to Orchard Towers for... Thai food! I can count with the fingers of one hand the number of times I went inside Orchard Towers. No, not to engage in sleazy activities in what used to be colloquially known as "Four Floors of Whores", of course, though authorities began forcing the nightclubs to shut down in August this year. Located on the third floor is a rather popular eatery serving Thai cuisine.

SIN: LeVeL33

Image
Welcome to the world's highest urban microbrewery! Situated on the 33rd storey of Tower 1 of Marina Bay Financial Centre, LeVeL33 is a restaurant-cum-sky bar that offers a splendid view of the bay in the downtown area of Singapore. The four of us agreed on their signature whole table  ContemBrewery Menu , priced at  S$148.00 per person, which incorporates "beer ingredients and brewery processes into creatively curated restaurant dishes".

SIN: The Oatberry Café

Image
Serving allergy-free granola products since 2015! The Oatberry Café is known as a plant-based, allergy-friendly granola specialty café, but it also serves delectable all-day breakfast items. I first chanced upon it near Telok Blangah MRT station while looking for a brunch spot after a hike at Mount Faber Park. However, it has since moved to Scotts Square along the bustling Orchard Road.

SIN: Folks Collective

Image
Addictive deep-fried squid appetiser with lots of garlic and chili! Even though it probably doesn't sound like one, Folks Collective is a Thai restaurant located at Cross Street Exchange near where I used to live. It's said that the inspiration behind the restaurant "stems from a Bangkok night market that grew out of an abandoned railway station" with 'every corner [revealing] a sentimental surprise from bygone days".
