POL: Zapiecek

Sweet or savoury Polish dumplings for you?

Polish enjoy many varieties of pierogi, which are local dumplings. Zapiecek, which has got a number of branches in the capital city of Warsaw, perhaps can give you a good introduction to the Eastern European dumplings. My BFF and I dropped by the more prominent branch at the Old Warsaw.

The restaurant offers quite a lot of varieties of sweet and savoury dumplings.

Ruthenian Dumplings (9 pcs) 23.59  (~S$8.65)
Taste: 7.5/10

Without much thinking, both of us decided on the original dumplings filled with a mixture of boiled potatoes, cottage cheese and onions seasoned with salt and pepper. They were pretty good, but could be much moister. Out of a few choices of toppings, we also unanimously decided on gravy containing bacon and onions.

Grilled Polish Sausages (Mix) 26.79  (~S$9.85)
Taste: 8.5/10

The traditional pork sausage grilled with alder wood was truly fragrant. I had a preference for that over its counterpart steamed with garlic and marjoram I chose my sausages to go with a bed of caramelised onions, which was amazingly sweet, as well as tomato ketchup and horseradish. Pika's advice: Prefer something tangy to sweet? Opt for sauerkraut (lit. sour cabbage) instead of onions.

Dumplings with Poppy Seeds and Raisins 12.49  (~S$4.60)
Taste: 8/10

Dumplings too for dessert of course! Those were actually nicer than the savoury ones, I felt. I chose sweet cream over vanilla sauce or butter to go with the dumplings.

Filled with poppy seeds, raisins and something nutty, each dumpling had an enjoyably chewy skin. The filling was mildly sweet, and so was the cream, hence the correct level of sweetness.

Dried Fruit Compote (Cold) 7.69  (~S$2.80)
Taste: 8.5/10

A concoction of apples, pears, plums and raisins, the compote was thick and adequately sweet. Thanks also to honey, cinnamon and lemon peel, it exuded a heady aroma. It came to the table cool instead of cold though. Had the temperature been lower, it would've been much more refreshing, given the hot weather.

Melon's Rating
Taste: 8/10
Ambience: 7/10
Service: 7.5/10
Overall: 7.5/10

The restaurant assures its patrons that the ingredients used in the making of the dumplings are natural without preservatives, emulsifiers, stabilisers, fragrances and dyes.
