JPN: Nagoyaeki Access Hotel (ナゴヤエキ アクセスホテル) [Breakfast]
Sweet and sour chicken with a confused identity...

Having iced coffee with milk for breakfast is a must for me whenever I'm in Japan. Anyway, I was also happy to enjoy some refreshing melon soda.

Back in Nagoya, I stayed at Nagoyaeki Access Hotel (3*) that's located just 300 m from Nagoya station. While the hotel doesn't offer buffet breakfast, guests who book a room with the breakfast plan get to choose from a small selection of set dishes. Rice, soup and drinks are available free-flow at the self-service corner to complement the meal.
Grilled Sawara Marinated with Miso Paste
Taste: 5/10
The grilled Spanish mackerel marinated in miso (Japanese fermented rice, barley and/or soybean) paste was rather unremarkable, but at least it didn't taste fishy. It was served alongside a medley of vegetables in various forms. The ones that stood out were the naturally sweet roasted pumpkin cubes and the earthy, pink-tinged lotus roots.
Hamburg Steak with Cheese and Tomato Sauce
Taste: 6.5/10
The ground beef patty proved to be a better choice. Topped with tangy tomato sauce and melted cheese, it was pretty tender, but could be juicier. The accompanying penne pasta came surprisingly close to the the much-coveted al dente texture, while the steamed broccoli florets weren't overcooked. Pika's advice: Not a fan of tomato sauce? You can have your hamburg steak with demi-glace sauce instead.
Chicken with Sweet and Sour Sauce
Taste: 5.5/10
It was a rather amusing rendition of sweet and sour chicken, one that seemed to exist in culinary limbo as it wasn't distinctly Chinese, Japanese or Korean. While the sauce was a tad too sugary for my taste, the chicken chunks were tender. What I enjoyed most was actually the glass noodle salad as it was light and refreshing.

Rice & Soup
You can help yourself to fluffy rice straight from the rice cooker at the self-service corner. Besides miso soup, there's a dispenser offering instant corn soup and clam chowder.

Melon's Rating
Taste: 5.5/10
Ambience: 7/10
Overall: 6/10
I suppose that was my least favourite breakfast of all the hotels I've stayed at in Japan thus far, but anyway, I've never had a truly bad meal in Japan that I couldn't bring myself to finish.
