POL: Youmiko Vegan Sushi

Amazingly tasty tomato sushi!

As my BFF and I had a late lunch at Zapiecek, we were looking for something rather simple for dinner. We decided on Youmiko Vegan Sushi near Metropol Hotel where we stayed at. I doubt I'd ever had the vegan version of the Japanese delicacy. Given the good reviews online, I was all the more interested to try.

Okimari II 69.00  (~S$25.50)

We went for the simplest set for two comprising five items.

Nigiri (Set Menu)
Taste: 9/10

In my opinion, the first variant that came to the table was the best. Each of them featured vinegared rice grains, which were held together well, that was topped with a superbly fresh and juicy piece of tomato and aromatic chopped spring onions.

Gunkan Maki (Set Menu)
Taste: 8.5/10

Each of the warship rolls was filled with vinegared rice topped with a mix of chopped asparagus and crunchy pine nuts, resulting in an interesting texture. In terms of presentation, I felt that the two rolls could've been placed on a white plate.

Hosomaki (Set Menu)
Taste: 7/10

A rather ordinary variant, the small rolls of vinegared rice were stuffed with julienned cucumbers and mushrooms. The ingredients used in the making of those rolls were fresh nonetheless.

Uramaki (Set Menu)
Taste: 8.5/10

Having the layer of seaweed on the inner side, the vinegared rice was studded with black and white sesame seeds. I enjoyed the marriage of flavours between the savoury deep-fried breaded asparagus and the sweet and sour passion fruit.

Futomaki (Set Menu)
Taste: 8/10

The thick rolls were tastier than average for sure. Featuring deep-friend crumbs, cucumbers, carrots and mushrooms drizzled with just a little bit of sweet brown sauce, they imparted a crunchy sensation that was pretty delightful.

Chocolate Mousse 16.00  (~S$5.90)
Taste: 7.5/10

We didn't want to leave without trying the one and only dessert item listed on the menu. Afterall, the Japanese say that there's always a second stomach for dessert, right?

Hidden underneath the gooey, frothy passion fruit sauce and coconut chips was a milky chocolate, which was certainly not as velvety as what one'd imagine to be the texture of a mousse. It was more like a soft cake that was mildly sweet.

Melon's Rating
Taste: 8/10
Ambience: 6.5/10
Service: 8/10
Overall: 7.5/10

I heard that the original branch is in Krakow, the second largest city in Poland after Warsaw. Pika's advice: Go for Omakase, priced at 69.00  (~S$25.50) per person, to sample the most varieties for the day.
