SIN: Soyato

Singapore's very first frozen soy!

UPDATE (11/08/2012): The stall in Bugis Junction has closed down. However, you can still find Soyato at Fresh Healthy Café @ Alexandra Retail Centre and The Plant Story @ Hort Park.

You don't like the sour taste of frozen yoghurt? You're craving for guilt-free ice cream? Give Soyato a try, freshly made with soy milk. Oh yes, did I tell you before that I actually hate soy milk? But anyway, since my friend said that Soyato's ice cream tasted like the usual ice cream, I gave it a try. And yup, my friend wasn't lying. For those of you who dislike soy milk, fear not!

For the ice cream, you can choose between classic and premium flavours. Some of the flavours are labelled "wickedly yummy", while others are labelled "divinely healthy". But well, I suppose there isn't much difference in the amount of calories between the two categories since Soyato claims that "one scoop can be burnt off just by typing on the computer for an hour!" :P Anyway, they also offer two types of beverages: Angel's Float and Devil's Shake.

Ice Cream (1 Classic Flavour) S$3.30
Honey Lemon - Taste: 6.5/10

The Honey Lemon flavour caught my attention, but sadly it wasn't as good as I expected it to be. It had quite a unique taste, but it wasn't milky enough (well, it wasn't supposed to be sherbet like other flavours such as Lime Sherbet, Mango Sherbet, etc). It was slightly sweet with no hint of sour at all. Also, it tasted more like lime than lemon, in my opinion.

Ice Cream (1 Premium Flavour) S$3.80
Cookie Explosion - Taste: 8/10

I actually tried the Cookie Explosion flavour this afternoon to combat the sweltering heat, especially after running around during the games session with the Primary 6 students in Geylang Methodist Primary School. It was pretty creamy, oozing the thick chocolatey flavour that made me craving for more. Too bad most of the cookie bits were too small to detect, but oh, they tasted like brownie. :P

Angel's Float S$3.80
Sprite + Green Tea Azuki - Taste: 7/10

For the float, you can choose one scoop of your choice to go with either Coke or Sprite. The Green Tea Azuki ice cream and Sprite was pretty interesting. Since the ice cream itself wasn't too sweet, it blended well with Sprite to give a fizzy, refreshing drink. Anyway, the green tea flavour was pretty strong, but they weren't generous with the amount of azuki beans. Hmm, I really can't imagine how this green tea flavoured ice cream would go with coke.

Devil's Shake S$4.50
Black Sesame + French Vanilla - Taste: 7.5/10

For the shake, you can choose two scoops of your choice to be blended together. The Black Sesame flavour was pretty fragrant with its sweet and very slightly bitter, but pleasant taste. Too bad it somehow overshadowed the French Vanilla flavour, although I could still slightly detect its aroma and velvety texture.

Melon's Rating
Taste: 7/10

Pika's advice: The Apple Cinnamon Pie flavour is recommended by quite a number of people. Since they offer several different flavours everyday, do try it if you spot one! Too bad I haven't seen it so far.
