SIN: Jing Long Seafood Restaurant

Sweet, sour, salty (and spicy when eaten with chili) fish skin! Started off as a humble stall in Bedok in 1999, Jing Long Seafood Restaurant managed to make its business work. After 10 years, it took up an offer to take over a restaurant space just opposite the original stall. It was one of the rare occasions that I went all the way to the east for dinner.

SIN: Laffio {CLOSED}

Customise your own pasta dish, but too wet for the aglio olio... UPDATE (26/07/2020): The restaurant has closed down. Laffio is said to be a good place for beer aficionados, for it serves a quite a wide selection of premium brews. Well, for someone who doesn't really enjoy beer, I went there only to try the food.

Delicious rice bowl with Hokubee beef,  63°  egg and furikake! UPDATE (26/07/2020):  The restaurant has closed down. It was a nice find on one afternoon after wandering around the vicinity of Bugis. A small, comfy restaurant with interesting drawings on its walls, GastroSmiths offers a variety of Asian and European comfort food.

Vegan burgers with international flavours! Do you know the difference between vegan and vegetarian diet? Some of my ex-students used to think that both terms are interchangeable, while others thought that the former would refer the person, while the latter would be used to describe a lifestyle or a dish without meat. nomVnom is a vegan - not vegetarian - fast-food eatery within a stone's throw away from Telok Ayer MRT station.

HKG: Evergreen Hotel (萬年青酒店) [Breakfast]

Nice sweet, sour and spicy spiral pasta for breakfast~ To end the December 2015 food trip series (finally!), I shall review the buffet breakfast that I had at Evergreen Hotel (3*). I chose the hotel due to its very close proximity to the famous Temple Street Night Market, where my favourite Duo Bao Mei Shi  - with its deep-fried intestines on sticks - is.

HKG: Fu Kee Seafood Restaurant (富記海鮮酒家)

Have you tried typhoon shelter crab before? To be frank, even though I've gone back and forth to HK pretty frequently, it was only last December that I had a taste of the famous traditional fisherman's dish at Lamma Island. As the name suggests, typhoon shelter crab is believed to have originated from a shelter for fishing boats during typhoons in HK, which numbers have declined in the past few decades. 

HKG: Mui Kee Congee (妹記生滾粥品)

What a nice breakfast of silky smooth congee and soothing lemon honey drink! One of the things that I had to fulfil during the trip to HK last year was to complete the Dragon's Back trek, leading all the way to Tai Long Wan (lit. Big Wave Bay). To fuel ourselves, my BFFs and I decided to have congee for breakfast.

HKG: Mak's Noodle (麥奀雲吞麵世家)

Mak's famous wantons in a bowl of beef brisket soup! Happy Chinese New Year! I shall mark the new year with this one-sentence story of Mak Woon-chi who started his business in the 1960s, once serving his famous wanton noodle to Chiang Kai-shek, the president of the Republic of China. The opening of Mak's Noodle in Singapore had made me realise that I hadn't even stepped into the original eatery in HK before. When I was in HK in last December, I only managed to visit the branch at Victoria Peak.

JPN: Beni (紅)

Big bowl of 'soba' with sweet pork belly and fish cake! We've finally come to the last post on Okinawa, Japan, at least for now. On the last evening of our trip, my BFFs and I chanced upon a  tonkatsu  (Japanese breaded, deep-fried pork cutlet) restaurant at the Paretto building near Hotel Sun Okinawa where we stayed at.
