How's the standard of the 'mui fan' now?
Let's see whether the eatery has been able to maintain the standard of the mui fan.
Starting with a single branch at Heartland Mall back in 2005, Xin Wang Hong Kong Café has grown to a total of 18 branches at the point of writing. It boasts 150 items on its menu, including favourite street food from HK and Macau. I used to frequent the eatery to get my fix of mui fan (Chinese dish of rice in gravy).
Let's see whether the eatery has been able to maintain the standard of the mui fan.
Sliced Fish Mui Fan S$10.50
Taste: 7.5/10
While it was still enjoyable, I'm afraid to say that the mui fan wasn't as delicious as before. First of all, I noticed that there weren't that many fish slices in such a big plate. The gravy, however, was thick enough for my liking. Besides that, the pork floss added some sweetness to the savoury dish.
Spicy Diced Pork and Egg Soup Noodle S$7.80
Taste: 6/10
The instant noodle main course turned out to be something I could quickly whip up on my own, making use of canned spicy diced pork found in the supermarket. Still, it wasn't too bad with the addition of a sunny-side up egg and bok choy (Chinese cabbage).
Crystal Har Gao S$4.90
Taste: 5/10
The shrimp dumplings left me. The skin wasn't that translucent, indicative of the fact that it was too thick. While the shrimp inside each dumpling was somewhat sweet, it could be juicier.
Almond Cream with Steamed Papaya S$5.50
Taste: 7.5/10
I was glad that the dessert dish ordered was more than decent. My bowl of hot almond cream was adequately sweet, even though it could be silkier. It came with only two papaya slices, but they were full of natural sweetness.

Service was somewhat efficient, but without a smile at all. Pika's advice: For those who enjoy going for late night supper, you may want to check out some of the branches that close at 2.00am from the website.
