SIN: Nasi Lemak Ayam Taliwang @ Yishun Park Hawker Centre

A love story between a Singaporean and an Indonesian~

Hailing from Lombok, Indonesia, ayam taliwang is a spicy grilled chicken dish said to be invented in the 1970s. The combination of ayam taliwang and nasi lemak (Malay rice dish cooked in coconut milk with pandan leaves), which can be found at Yishun Park Hawker Centre, was conceived by a Singaporean-Indonesian couple who used to work as flight attendants.

Nasi Lemak Ayam Taliwang S$6.20
Taste: 8.5/10

It was nice to see the fragrant coconut rice being served on top of a banana leaf, along with a mix of crunchy peanuts and anchovies, a sunny-side up egg and a slice of cucumber. There was also chili on the side, which was rather spicy and sweet, but it paled in comparison to that slathered on the chicken that was so tender and flavourful.

Prior to grilling, the chicken was marinated with a mixture of tamarind juice, shallots, chilis and shrimp paste, and then steamed to seal in the flavours. The chili on top of it was addictive, thanks to its robust profile and level of spiciness that made me sweat quite a bit. Pika's advice: For an equally fiery experience, you may want to try their Nasi Lemak Ayam Balado, which is also priced at S$6.20.

Nasi Lemak Fish and Mackerel Otah Set S$4.60

The stall also sells classic nasi lemak options if you're not feeling so adventurous. I tried the fried fish seasoned with turmeric, which was adequately fresh, but it could be juicier. I enjoyed the spiced mackerel cake as the taste of the fish wasn't overpowered by the spices. Texture wise, it was firm and bouncy enough for my liking.

Altogether there are 16 different sets sold at the stall labelled Set A to Set Q. If you happen to do the counting, please don't doubt yourself because indeed there are 17 letters from A to Q inclusive. Set C is apparently missing from the menu.
