SIN: Mid-Autumn 2022 Mooncakes @ The Capitol Kempinski Hotel Singapore

The hotel's signature cocktail in a truffle!

This year's Mid-Autumn Festival is around the corner, and that means a post on mooncakes is in order. I didn't have much difficulty choosing, for the assorted snowskin mooncakes offered by The Capitol Kempinski Hotel Singapore (5*) caught my attention early last month. Two boozy and three non-boozy flavours are offered this time round.

I almost forgot to take pictures of the cross-sections of two of the mooncakes. Phew!

Mixed Mini Snowskin Mooncakes (Kempinski Red Tin Box) S$78.00

The hotel allows you to choose the contents of your box, one of which can be Mao Shan Wang Durian that I didn't take as I'm not a big fan of durian. Instead, I opted for two of each of the following flavours: Matcha MochiLychee RoseChampagne Truffle and Valrhona & Plantation 1840 Truffle. All in all, I enjoyed the snowskin as it was satisfyingly pillowy without sticking on the teeth. Pika's advice: For an additional S$12.00, you can opt for a more elaborate Jade Treasure Box packaging.

Matcha Mochi Mini Mooncake
Taste: 7/10

4 Ms: that's a very nice alliteration, isn't it? The new flavour making its debut this year turned out to be the least of my favourite, particularly because of the fact that the Japanese rice cake wasn't well done. Having said that, even though it was hardly chewy, the Japanese green tea paste was lovely, thanks to its fragrance and bittersweet profile.

Lychee Rose Mini Mooncake
Taste: 8/10

"Each bite blooms from sweet to floral, like the prettiest bouquet of flowers", and I couldn't agree more. Although I was hoping that it'd be slightly less sweet, the delicate flavour of rose married the sweet lychee taste really well. Enveloped by the smooth lotus paste was a dollop of whipping cream that added richness to the mooncake.

Champagne Truffle Mini Mooncake
Taste: 9/10

You can never go wrong with champagne, can you? Known as the annual perennial bestseller, the mooncake featuring a boozy enough champagne truffle blanketed by velvety white lotus paste was decadent. The white chocolate truffle case could be less sweet though, but this is coming from someone who doesn't really like white chocolate to begin with.

Valrhona & Plantation 1840 Truffle
Taste: 8.5/10

Plantation 1840 is the hotel's signature cocktail comprising Cuban rum, sweet vermouth, pineapple juice, citrus, sugar cane syrup and mint sprig. To be frank, save for the rum, it was hard to detect any of those ingredients upon sinking my teeth into the truffle, but I was surely impressed by the intensity of the 70% Valrhona Guanaja chocolate paste mixed with whipping cream.

Melon's Rating
Taste: 7.5/10

Now I have the urge to try the actual Plantation 1840 cocktail served at The Bar at 15 Stamford.
