SIN: Azerbaijan Airlines J2 76 (Economy)

Triple cheese in Economy Class!

Has anyone flown Azerbaijan Airlines before? From my personal experience, it's possibly the most generous airline in terms of food and beverages in the Economy Class. My BFF and I had filling lunch when we flew from Istanbul, Turkey to Baku, the capital city of the nation that was once part of the Soviet Union.

Melon was pretty awed by the selection for lunch.

Mint

After take-off, the cabin crew went around with baskets full of mint. Somehow I felt like I was transported to the 1990s when I flew for the first time as a child.

J2 Meal

Eggplant Syrdak Taste: 7.5/10

For appetiser, a traditional Azerbaijani cuisine of stir-fried eggplants stewed in tomato sauce was served at room temperature. I enjoyed the soft eggplants that were made flavourful by the mildly sweet and savoury sauce, which was made aromatic by herbs and turmeric powder.

Conchiglie Pasta with Beef Taste: 6/10

Even though it wasn't really al dente, the seashell-shaped pasta was still quite nice to bite as it wasn't overly soft. Topped with light tomato sauce that included green peas and carrots, the beef cubes weren't tough, but a few were a tad dry.

Bulgur Pilaf with Chicken Taste: 7/10

The chicken main dish fared better, for the fibre-rich whole grain was enjoyably chewy and lightly seasoned. Cooked well, the white meat was pretty tender. The tomato sauce was similar to the one found in the beef main course, but somehow more flavourful.

Mocha Marble Cake Taste: 7/10

To my relief, the marble cake adequately airy and fluffy. While the mocha flavour could definitely be richer, I wasn't complaining at all as it was a decent piece of cake for dessert.

Assorted Cheese and Olives

I was quite surprised to see that three different kinds of cheese and olives were also offered. I found the smoky cheese to be moreish, while the whipped cream cheese could be fluffier.

Bread

The pre-packed slice of bread was soft enough without being dry.

Roasted Hazelnut

After the tray had been cleared, the cabin crew handed a packet of salt-free roasted hazelnuts to each passenger. Pika's advice: Feel free to request for more as what a few passengers did the other day.

Beverages

Red and white wine, fruit juice, coffee and tea were offered during the flight. I only had a cup of black coffee that was strong and aromatic alright.

Melon's Rating
Taste: 7.5/10
Ambience: 6/10
Service: 6.5/10
Overall: 6.5/10

I wonder how the food and beverage service in the Business Class would be.
