VIE: Le Saigon Hotel [Breakfast]

Vietnamese sticky rice for breakfast!

I had a quick stopover in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam before flying home with Singapore Airlines the next day. For the night, I stayed at Le Saigon Hotel (3*), which is located not too far from Tan Son Nhat International Airport. The stay came with a buffet breakfast that offered quite a good spread for a simple hotel.

Assorted Stuff

I went for half a plate of carbohydrates: Spaghetti Bolognese, fried rice and Vietnamese sticky rice topped with Chinese sausage and pork ham slices. Among the three, the sticky rice stood out with its fragrant chewiness and the savoury lift from the meat. To round off the plate, I added a sunny side-up egg, stewed beef and stir-fried vegetables that were all decent. Pika's advice: Looking for another carbohydrate? Rice porridge is available as well.

Pork Noodle Soup

The local pork noodle soup was built on a combination of yellow egg noodle and rice vermicelli, offering a nice interplay of springy and silky textures. Besides pork slices, it was topped with fried shallots, spring onions and chopped parsley that added both crunch and aroma. The comforting broth, lightly seasoned with a hint of sweetness, brought everything together nicely.

Salad

Although the cucumber slices could be crisper, I was generally pleased with the freshness of the ingredients for the salad. They were all brought to life with a drizzle of tangy Italian dressing.

Steamed Bun and Dumplings

Prior to that day, it'd been ages since I last had pandan-flavoured mantou (Chinese steamed bun made from wheat flour and yeast). I suppose the shu mai (Chinese pork and shrimp dumplings) were those supermarket-bought frozen ones, but they weren't bad.

Fruits

Besides a small banana, I had a slice of guava and jicama with seasoned salt and a touch of chili that added a nice kick.

Beverages

To my delight, the black coffee was potent. I also tried a glass of pinkish-orange cordial drink, which turned out to be red guava that I didn’t fancy.

Melon's Rating
Taste: 6.5/10
Ambience: 7/10
Overall: 6.5/10

The buffet spread had enough variety and quality to start the day.
