SIN: The Mushroom Pot {CLOSED}

Charming, colourful mushroom rolls!

UPDATE (15/08/2019): The restaurant has closed down.

Even though I'm a glutton, actually I'm not exactly a big fan of buffet. One part of me thinks that it's very sinful because I can eat a lot like there's no tomorrow, but at the same time, I do look forward to having a buffet meal with friends once in a while. If you're a lover of mushrooms, The Mushroom Pot may be for you.

We had a Weekday (Mon-Thu) Buffet Lunch priced at S$19.90 per person, which is S$5.00 less than the weekend price for adults. We agreed on the dark-coloured Wild Mushroom Soup which indeed had a distinct mushroom aroma, but insipid. All the ingredients served were fresh. Pika's advice: If you love prawns, do throw them into the hotpot in the beginning to make the soup sweeter!

Pickled Vegetables & Chili

The pickled vegetables were enjoyably crunchy and slightly spicy. The chili was aromatic and spicy enough, but I felt that it could be less watery.

The next five items shown are from the Starters and House Specials sections of the menu. You can have five choices per table.

Wild Mushrooms with Thai Spices

I believe I was eating oyster mushrooms, and they were truly chewy and juicy. The Thai sauce wasn't overwhelming that it didn't mask the true flavour of the mushrooms. A tad sour, a tad spicy, it was a refreshing appetiser dish for sure.

Mushroom Rolls

Another satisfying cold appetiser dish, the mushroom rolls were enjoyable to chew. Juicy, earthy mushrooms, together with leafy vegetables and slices of carrots were encased in fluffy egg wrappings. The rolls went well with the chili given with the pickled vegetables earlier.

Monkey Head Mushrooms in House Dressing

I've only been to the restaurant twice, but I really had the urge to get the deep-fried monkey head mushrooms again. The mushrooms were hidden in crispy batter, laden with enough mayonnaise which was sweet and creamy just like the time I had the dish on my first visit.

House Special Beef

The dish made use of tenderloin which wasn't particularly juicy throughout, but pleasantly delicate. It was savoury, made aromatic with the addition of onions, bell peppers and coriander leaves.

Crispy Squid with Wasabi Sauce

It was a pity that even though the batter was nicely crunchy and adequately seasoned with salt, the squid was somewhat rubbery. Nevertheless, the wasabi (Japanese horseradish) sauce really had a nice balance of flavour without being overpowering.

The next three items shown can be ordered unlimitedly, just like all the ingredients for the hotpot.

Wild Mushroom Fried Rice

I was pretty much disappointed with the fried rice which not only had very little mushrooms in it, but also was kinda bland in terms of taste. The rice wasn't fluffy either. I doubt I'll order it again when I visit the restaurant in the future.

Braised Wild Mushrooms E-Fu Noodle

The noodle wasn't particularly tasty either, but it was nicely slippery that it went down the throat easily. Also, there were more mushrooms in the dish, swimming together with green peppers for added crunch.

Fried Buns

Served piping hot, the buns were truly crunchy and fragrant. The inside was pretty airy, and it felt really good to sweep clean the condensed milk which was lusciously sweet and creamy.

Melon's Rating
Taste: 7.5/10
Ambience: 7/10
Service: 7/10
Overall: 7/10

The buffet lunch is served from 11.00am to 5.00pm daily. Do note that beverages are not included in the buffet pricing. Although there were a few misses in the past two visits, I'll still go back to get my mushroom fix in the future.
