INA: Garuda Indonesia [Economy, International, Short-Haul]
I'd been missing beef roulade, and the airline served it onboard!
The 2D1N trip was certainly the shortest period of time I've ever spent in Jakarta, Indonesia. After experiencing an enjoyable long-haul flight with Garuda Indonesia last year (read here), it was high time to try its short-haul sector again from Jakarta to Singapore and see how it fared.
GA Meal
Indonesian Vegetable Rujak - Taste: 7/10
Spelled rojak in Singapore and Malaysia, the Indonesian version served onboard comprised julienned turnips, pineapples and a few cabbages as a garnish. The vegetables were moderately juicy, mixed well with the vinegar dressing that was pretty tangy and mildly spicy.
Dry Chicken Curry with Steamed Vegetables and Rice - Taste: 7.5/10
The Indonesian main course showcased dry chicken curry that was adequately flavourful and spicy. Having said that, I felt that the white meat could be juicier. The rice was cooked well without being dry, while the steamed vegetables weren't overcooked.
Beef Roulade with Sautéed Vegetables and Potatoes - Taste: 8/10
I was pretty excited to see beef roulade making an appearance during the dinner service, especially since I hadn't eaten that for so long. The red meat was tender and moist, rolled with a thin layer of egg. The sautéed carrots, mushrooms and onions accompanied the beef well, while the potato cubes could be less dry.
Chocolate Cake - Taste: 8/10
It was a sweet ending to the meal indeed, for the chocolate cake was of adequate sweetness without being overly rich. The sponge cake layer was airy and moist. It was a pity that there was no hot tea served during the flight, which otherwise would make a good accompaniment to the dessert.
Bread
The individually packed bread was pretty soft. Coming along with it was a small pack of salted butter.
Beverages
I did mention about guava juice being available during the long-haul flight from Amsterdam, The Netherlands in my review. However, there wasn't any that evening, not that it mattered to me since I dislike anything and everything guava related. I requested for a glass of orange juice with ice cubes.
Melon's Rating
Taste: 7.5/10
Ambience: 7.5/10
Service: 8/10
Overall: 7.5/10
I've got no complaints about the flight: decent food, warm service and clean interior. Pika's advice: For your information, starting 14 June 2016, Garuda Indonesia flies directly from Singapore to Medan, Indonesia.
Above is just a random picture that I took while waiting for the gate to be opened. Can you see the two competing airlines in the background?
