SIN: Desa Kartika

The first two dishes were delicious, but not the next two...

Hi, everyone! I'm back from my overseas trip. As I'm still in the process of tidying up the photos that I took, let's continue talking about eateries in Singapore for now. Desa Kartika is a restaurant at The Centrepoint that's owned by a group bearing the same name. The group, which was established in 2013, also operates a restaurant called Pondok Kartika at Changi City Point.

For interested parties, the restaurant offers an affordable wedding package with a minimum of 300 guests.

Ayam Lemak Kartika S$14.50
Taste: 8/10

The highlight of the dinner was the chicken cooked in coconut curry seasoned with turmeric. There was an adequate amount of the white meat, which was undoubtedly tender. I enjoyed the gravy that had such nice colours as it was rich and spicy enough for my liking.

Tahu Telur S$10.00
Taste: 7.5/10

Hailing from the East Java province of Indonesia, the dish of beancurd deep-fried with eggs is quite popular in Singapore. Desa Kartika's version was quite tasty, topped with yummy sauce primarily made of kecap manis (Indonesian sweet soy sauce) and fresh shredded cucumbers.

Kangkung Belacan S$7.50
Taste: 5.5/10

The stir-fried kangkung (lit. water spinach) wasn't that great, even though it wasn't overcooked. It was kinda salty for my liking without much of the fragrance from the belacan (lit. shrimp paste). I appreciated the generous amount of fried shallots though, which gave an added texture to the dish.

Es Chendol S$4.95
Taste: 5/10

The dinner ended on a low note as there was only one dessert item left for the day. To top it off, it was lacklustre. The green jelly worms made of rice flour weren't bouncy. I also felt that there was too much of the thick coconut milk, while there wasn't much of the brown sugar syrup.

Melon's Rating
Taste: 6.5/10
Ambience: 7/10
Service: 5/10
Overall: 6/10

Service was somewhat efficient, but not particularly friendly. Is it difficult to serve customers with at least a bit of a smile? Pika's advice: Set menus are available for a minimum of five people, ranging from S$25.00 to S$45.00 per pax.
