"Cheese Meat Mania!"

While searching for a restaurant in Gifu City to satisfy my gyukatsu (lit. beef cutlet) craving, I stumbled upon KU-DETA. Just a few minutes' walk away from JR Gifu station, this cozy eatery caters to not only meat lovers, but also fans of rich, cheesy dishes. Though I didn't drink during my afternoon visit, the restaurant also boasts a curated selection of wines and cocktails.

Let's have a look at two of the lunch sets, each featuring a main dish, salad and rice.

Beef Katsu (Medium) Lunch Set ¥2,090 (~S$18.75)
Taste: 7.5/10

The Japanese writing of the dish on the menu is 牛カツランチ(中). With a Western twist on the classic gyukatsu, the thin, crispy breading encased medium-rare beef that was flavourful, though I've had juicier cuts elsewhere. Besides potato wedges, accompaniments included grated radish mixed with ponzu (Japanese citrus-based sauce), wasabi (Japanese horseradish), sansho (Japanese pepper) powder and a sprinkle of salt.

The visually appealing salad topped with ham featured a delightful medley of textures and flavours. From crisp leafy greens to roasted vegetables and sun-dried tomatoes, each ingredient mingled harmoniously. topped with a slice of ham.

Cheese Hamburg Lunch Set ¥1,760 (~S$15.80)
Taste: 8.5/10

The Japanese writing of the dish on the menu is チーズハンバーグランチ. Even more mouth-watering was the hamburg steak blanketed in luscious demi-glace and velvety cheese sauce that blended beautifully. Served alongside mashed potatoes and a sprig of basil, the minced beef patty was succulent, a delight to have with piping hot rice.

A seemingly popular choice among diners, the refreshing cold soba dish came with grated radish that brought everything together beautifully. The star of the show, however, was the quintet of deep-friend chicken chunks. With a crisp exterior that wasn't greasy, they were so tender and juicy.

Basque Cheesecake (Add-On) ¥385 (~S$3.45)
Taste: 6.5/10

The Japanese writing of the drink on the menu is 自家製バスクチーズケーキ. With a small top-up to the lunch set, I opted for a slice of their homemade Basque cheesecake to round off the meal. While it wasn’t too shabby, I found myself wishing for a more caramelised crust, as well as a richer, more decadent flavour profile.

Melon's Rating
Taste: 7.5/10
Ambience: 8/10
Service: 8.5/10
Overall: 8/10

During a quick chat with the owner couple, I found out that they'd honed their culinary skills in the USA. Pika's advice: For those interested in more indulgence, the restaurant also offers cheese fondue.
