JPN: Okiyo Shokudo (おきよ食堂)

'Goma saba' - a local specialty!

On our first day in Fukuoka, Japan, my BFFs and I went to Nagahama Fish Market, which is Fukuoka's answer to the fish market at Tsukiji or Toyosu in Tokyo. Well, we didn't actually see the wet market itself, but we went there to have lunch at the highly rated Okiyo Shokudo that has been around since 1947.

Take note that the menu is written in Japanese outside the restaurant, so you need to decide on what to have before entering. On the glass display are a few of the more popular selections, so you can always take a photo of them and show the staff which ones to order.

Goma Saba Set ¥750 (~S$9.30)
Taste: 8/10

The actual name of the dish is 胡麻鯖定食. A specialty of Fukuoka, goma saba is a dish of raw mackerel slices marinated in a mixture of soy sauce, mirin (a kind of Japanese sweet rice wine) and sesame seeds. The fish was fresh and springy, although the marinade could use more mirin to balance the salty profile of the soy sauce further. Also served on the tray were rice, beancurd, shredded radish, pickles, beancurd, miso (Japanese fermented rice, barley and/or soybean) soup and rice. Pika's advice: Go for Goma Buri Set, which uses yellowfish instead of mackerel, at the same price should you prefer a thicker fish.

Simmered Red Fish Set ¥1,050 (~S$13.00)
Taste: 9/10

The actual name of the dish is 赤魚煮付定食. The red sea bream was the clear winner for me as the flesh wasn't only fresh and firm, but also naturally sweet. In addition, the simmering sauce was full-bodied and certainly a delight to drizzle over rice. The shredded radish for this set meal came with konjac. There were pickles, beancurd and miso soup as well.

Seafood Rice Bowl ¥1,800 (~S$22.25)
Taste: 7/10

The actual name of the dish is 海鮮丼. I was harbouring a high expectation for this particular dish that came with pickles and miso soup, but it turned out to be not so spectacular. The variety of seafood was there, including different fishes, salmon roe, squid, octopus, shrimp and sea urchin, but not all were as fresh as expected. The rice was drizzled with a bit of sweet sauce that was pretty addictive.

In fact, Okiyo Shokudo is the oldest eatery at the Fish Market Centre.
