SIN: Pranakorn

No 'pad thai' and pineapple fried rice: no problem!

Pranakorn, while the spelling may vary, is an old name for the capital city of Thailand: Bangkok. The head chef, of what considered to be a little gem in Changi Village by many, hailed from Chonburi that's approximately 80 km from Bangkok. There's quite an array of dishes served there, but forget about finding the two aforementioned quintessential Thai dishes on the menu.

It's said that minced pork is a key ingredient in quite a number of dishes from the chef's hometown.

Homemade Fried Pork Cakes with Special Dipping Sauce S$7.80
Taste: 8/10

The restaurant's signature appetiser dish of deep-fried pork cakes was tasty for sure. Having quite a bouncy texture somewhat akin to Thai fish cakes, the minced pork was mixed with chopped lemongrass and herbs for an added aroma. Topped with ground peanuts, the somewhat thick dipping sauce had a sweet-and-salty profile.

Thai Style Stick Noodle with Minced Pork in Tom Yum Soup S$6.80
Taste: 7.5/10

I'm not a big fan of tom yum (Thai hot and sour soup) as it can get too overwhelming for me. Pranakorn's version, however, wasn't so robust. I found it rather comforting, although others may want something richer. The thin noodle was accompanied by a boiled egg, minced pork cakes, beansprouts and spring onions. Pika's advice: A dry version is also available at the same price.

Stir-Fried Spicy Basil Minced Chicken with Rice S$6.80
Taste: 7.5/10

For something different, I decided to get minced chicken instead of minced pork with rice. Stir-fried with an adequate amount of chili slices, basil leaves and green beans, the meat was juicy enough. I was hoping for it to be just slightly less salty though. As an accompaniment, there was a wedge of piquant century egg.

Mango Sticky Rice S$6.00
Taste: 8/10

To end the meal, I tried the seasonal dessert item that happened to be available. True to its name, the glutinous rice was cooked well, resulting in a soft and sticky texture that was satisfying to bite. Thankfully, the mangoes were adequately sweet, which were complemented well by the thick coconut milk seasoned with a bit of salt.

Melon's Rating
Taste: 7.5/10
Ambience: 6/10
Service: 7.5/10
Overall: 7/10

I'd wanted to try their Thai milk tea, but I was too full. Next time then!
