Not the best 'kolo mee' experience for sure...

Here's the first post of 2022! I hope everyone has been having a great start to the year so far. Following the last post on Haig Road Putu Piring at the end of last year, I'm going to briefly touch on another stall that I patronised at Haig Road Market & Food Centre. It specialises in two noodle Sarawakian dishes from the eastern part of Malaysia: kolo mee and laksa.

Sarawak Kolo Mee S$4.00
Taste: 6/10

I love kolo mee, which is a dish of dry noodle typically tossed in a savoury pork and shallot mixture. However, Lin Yu Mei's version just doesn't quite suit my taste buds. My bowl of noodle was edible for sure, but somehow lacked the fragrance and the taste profile of delicious kolo mee. Besides that, the accompanying clear soup was rather bland.

Thankfully, the egg noodle was adequately springy. I also enjoyed the chili that really had a kick. Having said that, I wasn't impressed by the lightly marinated minced pork and char siew (Chinese barbecued pork). Pika's advice: For an additional S$1.00, you can upsize your kolo mee.

Fried Wanton (10 pcs) S$3.00
Taste: 6/10

I didn't get the chance to try the other main dish as I was alone, but I went for a side dish of bite-sized deep-fried wantons. Similarly, they were nothing to rave about as the pork fillings weren't as juicy as expected. Served on the side was a not-so-generous portion of mayonnaise.

Melon's Rating
Taste: 6/10

Service wasn't remarkable either even though I was there just slightly after 10.30am before there was any queue. I highly doubt I'll be back to the stall to try the Laksa Sarawak, which is priced at S$6.00.

Perfect start for 2022 Cliff, you can't go wrong with noodles and wonton. Laksa is another story, I can't never find great laksa just yet but who knows one of these days maybe.....
