SIN: Mid-Autumn 2023 Mooncakes @ Janice Wong

Lavender apricot for the win!

Happy birthday to Pikachu! With Mid-Autumn Festival on the horizon, and Melon's birthday in exactly two weeks' time, it's customary for the two of them to celebrate with mooncakes. This year, we shall look at the snowskin mooncakes from the sweets boutique by Janice Wong, a Singaporean chef, chocolatier and artist.

As we've been blessed with more mooncakes than usual this year, we decided to purchase a box of four small mooncakes instead of eight small or four big mooncakes.

Floral Snowskin Mooncakes S$50.00

As "perfect companions for moments of quiet reflection over tea", the four mooncakes are presented in a pastel palette: RoseLavender ApricotJasmine and Osmanthus Figs. The snowskin of each was adequately soft without being too thick, while neither of the filling was too sweet.

Osmanthus Figs Mooncake
Taste: 8/10

For someone who loves the aroma of osmanthus, I'm quite impressed with the fragrance exuded by the bright yellow variant, although it'd certainly be even better if it were bolder. The paste was studded with bits of figs.

Jasmine Mooncake
Taste: 7.5/10

As for the green-coloured mooncake with gold foil, it graced the palate gently with its unmistakable aroma of jasmine tea infused into the lotus paste. I'm not too sure, but I suppose the paste contained finely shredded tea leaves.

Rose Mooncake
Taste: 8/10

I was enamoured by the paste with a heady aroma of rose encased in the pink-coloured mooncake topped with silver leaf. Actual rose petals were folded into the smooth paste, giving the latter a bit of textural contrast.

Lavender Apricot Mooncake
Taste: 8.5/10

Last but not least for sure, the mooncake decked out in my favourite colour was actually the winner to me among the four. While I couldn't taste much of the bits of apricots, the fragrant lavender paste was decadent, making my taste buds dance in delight.

Melon's Rating
Taste: 8/10

It's not common to see a box of four mini mooncakes. I hope we'll have more of such from other vendors too in the near future. Pika's advice: For something different, you may want to indulge in chocolates instead of mooncakes. Priced at S$105.00 for a set of eight pieces, the chocolates that are shaped like mooncakes and makred by intricate hand-dripped paint come in "familiar flavours that evoke a sense of nostalgia".
