AUS: Royal Stacks
Unhinged jaw required to tackle the Kavorka!
It was certainly a memorable first trip to Down Under right from the start. After not just one or two, but three flights from Singapore to Melbourne, Australia, I finally found myself unwinding over a burger dinner at Royal Stacks. The brand prides itself in using 100% pasture-fed Australian beef, never frozen and free from antibiotics.
Royal Stacks opened its first outlet at Collins Street, the very branch I visited, in 2016.
Single Stack A$15.20 (~S$13.50)
Taste: 8.5/10
It might sound unassuming by name, but the classic burger was confidently executed with the juicy, well-seared beef patty taking the centre stage. Sandwiched between lightly toasted bunds, the patty was layered with melted cheese, lettuce, tomato, pickles and their signature sauce that brought everything together, lending a pleasant balance of richness and tang to each bite.
Kavorka A$18.80 (~S$16.70)
Taste: 8/10
A behemoth that I didn't even know where to start, it featured two pieces of fried chicken blanketed with melted cheese and a rather generous amount of chipotle mayonnaise that added a smoky, spicy kick. To complete the towering creation, there were red cabbage and carrot coleslaw, as well as pickles, that provided a crisp, vinegary lift that cut through the overall richness of the burger.
Cheesy Fries (Regular) A$6.90 (~S$6.15)
Taste: 7.5/10
The bowl of fries was one of the reliable sides that I ordered. While there wasn't anything particularly special about the fries themselves, the homemade cheese sauce was pretty rich, superior to some processed, artificial-tasting alternatives out there. It did get a touch too salty towards the end though, so I was glad to be sharing them with my travel buddy. Pika's advice: You may want to consider their Cheesy Gems instead, which seems to make a better vessel for the cheese sauce. A regular portion is priced at A$8.60 (~S$7.65).
Mac'n'Cheese Croquette A$8.50 (~S$7.55)
Taste: 7.5/10
A fan-favourite side that takes deep-fried indulgence to the next level, the golden-brown croquette was crunchy, giving way to a dense interior of warm macaroni and cheese. While it was tasty, I was hoping for the filling to be richer with a more gooey texture that would've elevated the experience, but I wouldn't consider it to be outstanding.
It’d been a while since I last had a milkshake, and I finally gave in. Thick and creamy without beingly overwhelmingly sweet, the milkshake was so decadent that I didn't regret the extra calories. A rich swirl of dark caramel clung to the inside of the plastic cup, adding the right amount of saltiness, while the topping of biscuit crumbles provided a crunch to the drink.
