AUS: Me Dee

Authentic Thai food in the heart of Melbourne Chinatown!

My travel buddy and I checked out the rather compact Chinatown in Melbourne, Australia one afternoon. While wandering in search of something to eat, we came across a food court tucked within an old-school shopping centre called The Paramount. Among the various stalls, Me Dee caught my attention, offering honest, fuss-free Thai fare that focuses on flavour and value.

We ordered on two dishes and a drink to share, just to keep the sugar in check.

Boat Noodle Soup (Beef) A$14.00 (~S$12.50)
Taste: 8.5/10

The noodle dish arrived looking hearty and deeply inviting. The dark-coloured broth hinted at a rich, slow-cooked base, carrying a gentle herbal depth that was comforting. The silky, thin rice noodle came with tender beef slices and chunks, as well as a springy meatball. The bowl was rounded off with a scattering of pork cracklings, fried garlic bits and herbs.

BBQ Pork with Sticky Rice A$14.00 (~S$12.50)
Taste: 8.5/10

Served alongside soft and chewy sticky rice were delightfully succulent pork skewers with the right hint of char along the edges, giving off a gentle smoky aroma. They paired nicely with nam jim jaew dipping sauce made of fish sauce, lime juice, sugar, dried chili, herbs and toasted rice powder and fresh herbs.

Thai Milk Tea (Small) A$3.00 (~S$2.70)
Taste: 7.5/10

A cup of chilled Thai milk tea brightened the table with its vibrant hue. It was smooth enough for my liking, though a little heavy on condensed milk for someone who prefers the more earthy, tannic kick of the classic tea. Still, it made for a pleasant, creamy finish to the meal. Pika's advice: Simply add A$1.00 (~S$0.90) to get a larger version.

Melon's Rating
Taste: 8/10

They proudly claim to serve "the best real Thai food in town." I wonder how many Thai diners would back that up, but I can definitely say I enjoyed my meal.
