JPN: Yufuin No Mori (ゆふいんの森)

Virgin experience with egg and 'kabosu' ice cream!

In Kyushu, Japan, my BFFs and I had the opportunity to experience Yufuin No Mori, one of the limited express train services operated by JR Kyushu. We took the train twice from Fukuoka to Beppu and from Yufuin to Kurume. This post features some of the food and drinks sold onboard.

From light bites to bento boxes, there are quite a few varieties to choose from.

Takemoto Orizuru Bento ¥1,620 (~S$20.00)
Taste: 7.5/10

The Japanese writing on the menu for this dish is たけ竹本 折鶴~おりずる~弁当. Sold only onboard Yufuin No Mori, it's prepared under the supervision of Sushi Takemoto, a One Michelin Star restaurant in Kitakyushu. Featuring seafood items and colourful vegetables in the upper section, as well as plain and chicken rice balls in the lower section, it's the most expensive meal box on the menu. I found it pretty delectable as the ingredients were adequately fresh with natural sweetness.

Yufuin No Mori Bento ¥1,100 (~S$13.60)
Taste: 7/10

The Japanese writing on the menu for this dish is ゆふいんの森弁当. I saw less colours in the train's signature meal box, but it was enjoyable nonetheless. I found the rice mixed with mushrooms to be palatable. The chicken was tender, but the beef slices weren't as much. It was good to have the two sweet items - sweetened red bean and sesame ball - at the end of the meal.

Egg Ice Cream ¥350 (~S$4.30)
Taste: 8/10

The Japanese name of the ice cream is うちのたまご アイス. One spoonful of it led me to a conclusion that it's essentially egg custard-flavoured ice cream. Having a mild degree of sweetness and a heady aroma, I found it to be adequately velvety for my liking.

Kiriya Kabosu Ice Cream ¥400 (~S$4.95)
Taste: 8/10

The Japanese writing on the menu for this ice cream is 桐屋 かぼすアイスクリーム. Kabosu is a kind of citrus fruit mostly produced in Oita. The ice cream tasted pretty much like lime sherbet with a nice balance of the sweet and the sour and a peculiar, but delightful fragrance from the fruit. Pika's advice: Kiriya is a Japanese tea specialty shop in Yufuin. You may want to try the full-bodied Kiriya Green Tea Ice Cream that's under the recommendation list on the menu. It's also priced at ¥400 (~S$4.95).

Yufuin Cider ¥260 (~S$3.20)
Taste: 7.5/10

The Japanese writing on the menu for this drink is ゆふいんサイダー.  Served in a green-coloured bottle, the non-alcoholic fizzy drink was adequately refreshing, but not that special as I found the taste to be akin to Sprite.

Yuzu Squash ¥350 (~S$4.30)
Taste: 8/10

The Japanese name of the drink is 柚子みつスカッシュ. The recipe comes from Tea Room and Nicol's Bar in a long-established inn called Tama No Yu in Yufuin. I was invigorated by the fizzy yuzu (a species of aromatic Asiatic citron) drink sweetened with honey, which is suggested in the Japanese name, but doesn't appear in the English name.

Melon's Rating
Taste: 7.5/10
Ambience: 7.5/10
Overall: 7.5/10
