SIN: The Coastal Settlement

Have you tried mayonnaise infused with passion fruit before?

The Coastal Settlement is a lovely restaurant decorated with all things of the past, from antique memorabilia to vintage vehicles. Tucked away in the quieter side of Netheravon Road, which isn't too far from the abandoned Changi Hospital, the building was previously used by the Royal Air Force for fault control during the British occupation.

The restaurant features some carefully curated dishes that incorporate local flavours with a contemporary twist.

Calamari with Passion Fruit Mayo S$14.00
Taste: 7.5/10

For a start, I had a taste of their calamari rings, which were adequately fresh and bouncy. They were lightly coated with batter and dusted with curry salt and pepper. An interesting thing was the passion fruit mayonnaise that was placed inside half of the rind of the fruit. It was sweet, a bit tangy and creamy enough for my liking.

Nasi Lemak S$16.00
Taste: 7/10

The jasmine rice cooked in coconut milk and pandan leaves was pretty aromatic. It came with a piece of fried chicken wing, two deep-fried prawns and a sunny-side up egg, all of which weren't greasy. I also appreciated the crispy anchovies and three slices of cucumbers. It was a pity that the chili was only very mildly spicy though.

Smoked Salmon Rosti Sausage S$26.00
Taste: 8/10

The hand-cut rosti was satisfying as it was crispy and flavourful, going well with creamy avocado and a dollop of sour cream topped with spring onions. As accompaniments, there were Norwegian smoked salmon slices that were pretty bouncy without being too salty, as well as a chicken sausage stuffed with melted cheese.

TCS Chendol Custard S$14.00
Taste: 6/10

The dessert was a rather familiar sight, although one probably wouldn't see the usual worm-like pandan jelly and attap seeds together with popcorn very often. Hidden underneath the coconut ice cream was vanilla custard, which in turn was surrounded by gula melaka (Malay brown sugar) shaved ice. Overall, the dessert wasn't too bad, although it grew pretty sweet towards the end.

Melon's Rating
Taste: 7/10
Ambience: 8/10
Service: 7.5/10
Overall: 7.5/10

I also like it that the restaurant is surrounded by lush greenery. Pika's advice: The restaurant offers Afternoon High Tea Set from 3.30pm to 5.30pm daily. With a minimum of two to dine, it's priced at S$38.00 per person.
