BAH: Gulf Air [Economy, International, Short-Haul]

First time having orzo above the sky!

On our red-eye flight from Manama, Bahrain to Tbilisi, Georgia, my BFF and I were blessed with a newer Airbus 320 aircraft. Despite being sleepy, we wouldn't want to miss the meal service and the modern In-Flight Entertainment (IFE).

Don't you think Melon looked sleepy too?

GF Meal

Orzo Salad - Taste: 7.5/10

For the uninitiated, orzo is a type of short-cut pasta that's shaped like a grain of rice. Cooked with carrots and green peas the pasta made a pretty good appetiser as it was seasoned lightly with the addition of a dash of lemon juice.

Cream Sauce Chicken with Mashed Potatoes Taste: 8/10

Smothered in white sauce that was rich and creamy enough for my liking, the chicken chunks were adequately tender. They came with mashed potatoes that were milky and velvety.

Fish Biryani Taste: 8/10

The fish main course might look spicy, but it wasn't very much so. When it arrived, most of the moist fish cubes were underneath the fragrant long-grain rice topped with fried shallots. The accompanying long beans weren't overcooked.

Lemon Pound Cake Taste: 8/10

Another pound cake was seen on my second flight with Gulf Air. I wasn't complaining though as it was delectably moist. The lemon flavour could be stronger though.

Bread

Compared to the one I received on the previous flight, the bread was fluffier. It came with a packet of salted butter at room temperature.

Others

A packet of Hwa Tai cream crackers from Malaysia was seen, along with a creamy cheese triangle.

Beverages

It was surprising that the previous flight didn't carry some apple juice, but it was available during the short-haul flight. I didn't request for coffee or tea as I did want to take a short nap.

Melon's Rating
Taste: 8/10
Ambience: 7/10
Service: 7.5/10
Overall: 7.5/10

Based on that one experience, the catering from Bahrain International Airport seems promising. Pika's advice: A vegetarian main course is always available onboard any Gulf Air flights, but it may not be vegan friendly. Pre-book your meal at least 24 hours before the scheduled departure time of your flight.
