CUR: Rozendaels
Caribbean main courses with colourful side dishes!
It's my pleasure to share with you the very first post on Curaçao, one of the Dutch overseas territories in the Caribbean. This is also a virgin post on Caribbean dishes, which were prepared by Rozendaels, a popular restaurant that's quite a distance away from the centre of Willemstad.
The restaurant has been around since 2006.

Blue Rozendaels NAƒ 13.00 (~S$9.65)
Taste: 7.5/10
To be able to have a cocktail featuring Blue Curaçao in its territory of origin was certainly an opportunity not to be missed. Mixed with ginger ale, fresh mint and lime juice, the drink was adequately refreshing, although I felt that it could be slightly stronger and sweeter.
Bang Bang Kip NAƒ 17.50 (~S$13.00)
Taste: 8/10
Possibly a sibling to Indonesian gado-gado, bang bang kip is a shredded chicken salad dish topped with peanut sauce. Topped with diced tomatoes, pine nuts and black sesame, the leafy greens were crisp. As for the peanut sauce, it was pleasantly sweet and savoury, but they could be more generous with it.
Keshi Yena NAƒ 29.00 (~S$21.55)
Taste: 8/10
Chicken stuffed with cheese is not uncommon, but what about the other way round? It was a delicious ball of stringy Dutch cheese stuffed with savoury shredded chicken that had been marinated with spices. Accompanying the main course were fried plantain, star-shaped fried funchi (Caribbean fried polenta), coleslaw, spicy onions and sweet spiced cake. For the complimentary side order, I chose to have more fried funchi, which were truly crunchy on the outside without being too oily.
Dradu Krioyo Style NAƒ 33.00 (~S$24.55)
Taste: 8.5/10
Seasoned simply with salt and pepper, the mahi mahi fish was beautifully flaky and juicy. It was served with Creole sauce made of tomatoes, onions, green bell peppers and celery. The side order of mixed fried rice was fragrant, thanks to the variety of spices used.
Quesillo Pina Cubano NAƒ 12.50 (~S$9.30)
Taste: 8/10
The restaurant prides itself in its selection of dessert items. I actually cringed when I saw the two spoons placed that way when the flan arrived. That aside, it was velvety, going well with caramel sauce and a dash of Cuban rum. It came with coconut-flavoured whipped cream and a slice of pineapple lightly torched on one side.

Ambience: 8/10
Service: 6.5/10
Overall: 7.5/10
Service was friendly, but a tad slow even though there weren't lots of diners that evening. Also, I was actually given a bowl of bang bang kip with quite a number of ants at first, but that was quickly replaced. Pika's advice: The restaurant serves other dishes besides Caribbean cuisine. Do take a look at the menu in the website.
