Enjoying delicious pickled herring near the canal~

Are you a fan of pickled herring? I definitely am, which many of you would've probably guessed from my previous posts. At Frens Haringhandel, a kiosk not far from Bloemenmarkt (lit. Flower Market), you can enjoy more than just that. The family-owned business has been around for more than 25 years.

My BFF and I shared two snacks between lunch and dinner.

Haring €3.50 (~S$5.55)
Taste: 9/10

One of the best I've ever had thus far, the pickled herring was mouth-watering. With a bouncy texture, the fish was done well with the right sweet, sour and salty balance. The sliced gherkins were crunchy and refreshingly sour, while the chopped onions were equally crunchy and naturally sweet.

Kibbeling €5.50 (~S$8.70)
Taste: 8/10

Did you know that kibbeling (Dutch battered chunks of fish) was originally made of cod cheeks? Dusted with cayenne pepper, the meaty fish bites were satisfying, though they could be a bit juicier. They went really well with the tangy mayonnaise served on the side.

Melon's Rating
Taste: 8.5/10

Don't rush. Take a look at the various fishes offered behind the glass display before deciding what to try. Pika's advice: For something more substantial, have your pickled herring in a bun. Broodje Haring is sold at €4.50 (~S$7.05).
