NLD: Moeders

Bring birthday mums to this restaurant for a surprise!

Literally meaning 'mothers', Moeders is a restaurant that's well-loved by locals and tourists alike. For more than 25 years, it's been serving local dishes based on what they claim to be tried-and-tested mothers' and grandmothers' recipes. The menu isn't particularly big though.

Be prepared to wait if you don't make a reservation as the restaurant seems to be constantly crowded.

Green Pea Soup €6.50 (~S$10.20)
Taste: 8/10

The traditional soup made of blended green peas that was served at the right temperature made a good start to the dinner. Honestly, the texture was rather coarse for my liking, but the soup certainly tasted pleasant. Swimming inside were bacon bits and beef sausage slices.

Carpaccio €9.50 (~S$14.90)
Taste: 8/10

The thinly sliced raw beef was another starter that we shared before savouring the main course. The red meat was topped with grated parmesan cheese, pine nuts and leafy greens that were fresh. It was made more enjoyable with homemade pesto, but unfortunately there was only a small amount of it hidden underneath the vegetables.

Suddervlees €19.00 (~S$29.85)
Taste: 7.5/10

I was having a high expectation for the stewed beef that came with boiled potatoes and pickled red cabbages. To be fair, it wasn't bad at all. While I couldn't deny that the meat was tender, I felt that the gravy could be a tad thicker. Also, it could use slightly less salt and just a bit more sugar.

Speculaas Parfait €6.50 (~S$10.20)
Taste: 8.5/10

Thankfully, it all ended well as we made the right choice for dessert. The homemade ice cream studded with speculaas (Dutch spiced cookies) was aromatic and firm, yet velvety at the same time. Sitting on some chocolate sauce, it was topped with whipped cream, strawberry and golden berry.

Melon's Rating
Taste: 8/10
Ambience: 6/10
Service: 7/10
Overall: 7/10

Be awed by the massive collections of photos of mothers decorating the restaurant. You can bring a photo of yours too for the staff to add to the display.

I don't know what's the pleasant surprise going to be should you bring your birthday mum, but I'm sure it'll be something memorable. Pika's advice: If you happen to be there with at least one dining partner, you may want to consider the Hollandse Rijsttafel, which is priced at €20.00 (~S$31.30) per pax, to sample an array of Dutch specialties.
