SIN: Blue Jasmine

Blue rice, sticky rice, mocktail and everything nice!

Blue Jasmine is a Halal-certified restaurant at Park Hotel Farrer Park that serves dishes from Southern Thailand and the Esarn region, making use of spices imported directly from the country. I've got to know about the restaurant from corporate offer e-mail messages that I've been receiving lately.

Given the name of the restaurant, I just had to order the rice coloured with butterfly pea extract to go with the savoury dishes.

Esarn Larb Chicken Balls S$12.00
Taste: 8/10

Supposedly an appetiser dish that happened to come to the table last before dessert, the deep-fried minced chicken balls actually went well with rice. I really enjoyed the accompanying sauce that was fiery enough to whet my appetite, on top of being addictively sweet and tangy.

Fresh Squid Holy Basil S$24.00
Taste: 9/10

The best item that afternoon was the stir-fried squid with crispy holy basil and crunchy long beans. Cooked with a combination of chili and wild garlic, the squid was truly springy and juicy, testament to its freshness and the right cooking time. Besides squid, chicken and beef options are available.

Orange Sea Bass Curry S$26.00
Taste: 8.5/10

A dish that reminded me of my mom's cooking, the orange curry was equally packed with flavours and refreshing due to fresh tamarinds. I was hoping for it to be just a little bit thicker to be even better. On top of fresh fillets of sea bass, there were bits of palm heart and yam.

Mango and Blue Jasmine Sticky Rice S$14.00
Taste: 8/10

Elegantly presented on a long rectangular plate were blue-coloured sticky rice topped with caramelised peanuts, sweetened coconut cream and one of the sweetest mangoes I've had this year. While the sticky rice could be denser, it was adequately salted to provide a nice balance to the sweetness imparted by the other elements.

Blue Jasmine S$10.00
Taste: 8/10

A trip to Blue Jasmine would perhaps be incomplete without ordering the signature mocktail that takes after the name of the restaurant. The cold butterfly pea tea flavoured with lychee and yuzu (a species of aromatic Asiatic citron) was a good thirst-quencher in the hot midday sun.

Buffet breakfast is served at the restaurant from 6.30am to 10.00am, followed by a la carte dining from 10.00am to 11.30pm. Pika's advice: Looking for a buffet dinner? The restaurant offers Anchan Thai Buffet Dinner every Friday and Saturday from 6.30pm to 10.00pm, which is priced at S$42.00 per pax.
