SIN: Typhoon Café

Interested to try a miso-flavoured soufflé dessert?

Typhoon Café is a modern Taiwanese eatery at Plaza Singapura, born out of the "obsession for artisan fruit teas and larger-than-life desserts". In Chinese, the name of the café is 台風 (lit. typhoon), which is actually a blending of the words 台灣 (lit. Taiwan) and 風味 (lit. flavour).

It took my BFF and me a while to decide on what to order as the menu is pretty huge.

Golden Chicken Fritters S$8.90
Taste: 8/10

I know I just wrote about Harry's popcorn chicken two days ago, but here's something nicer with tangy Sriracha mayonnaise served separately. The chicken bits were crispy and well-seasoned with salt and pepper. The deep-fried basil leaves lent a nice aroma to the appetiser dish.

Typhoon Fried Rice S$12.90
Taste: 5.5/10

The stewed pulled pork fried rice didn't impress me. On top of the fact that it could be moister, it wasn't that flavourful. There was hardly any smoky aroma of the wok. Anyway, it came with a bowl of miso (Japanese fermented rice, barley and/or soybean) soup and shredded carrot salad that tasted rather oddly sweet.

Signature Taiwanese Oyster Fritter Mee Sua S$15.90
Taste: 4.5/10

As one of the signature dishes, the mee sua (Chinese thin noodle made of wheat flour) that came with pork intestines wasn't any better. In contrast to a bowl of goopy goodness that I was expecting, the broth was rather watery without much character. The deep-fried oysters were way too small and not that fresh either.

Cloud Nine Miso Soufflé with Yuzu Sorbet S$17.90
Taste: 8/10

If you've noticed, the dessert that we ordered bears the highest price tag in this post. I was glad that the airy soufflé tasted pretty good with a nice balance of the sweet from the sugar and the savoury from the miso. It came with a scoop of refreshing sorbet topped with an aromatic lavender biscuit.

Melon's Rating
Taste: 6.5/10
Ambience: 7/10
Service: 7/10
Overall: 6.5/10

I don't think I'll have a full meal there anymore next time, but I suppose I don't mind sampling other dessert items. Pika's advice: Looking for an Instagram-worthy dessert? You may want to try their Typhoon Pavlova and Hell Valley Chocolate Volcano, which are priced at S$15.90 and S$16.90 respectively.
