IDN: Ta Wan

Delectable chicken, fish and shrimp porridge!

Boldly claiming to be one of the best restaurants in Jakarta, Indonesia, Ta Wan is a Chinese restaurant chain that has been around since 1996. Literally meaning 'Big Bowl', it specialises in porridge. I had a really good dinner at its Mall Taman Anggrek branch without having to dig deep into my pocket, so read on to find out more.

My BFF and I ordered four dishes, each indicated as a must-try in the menu booklet.

Bubur Spesial 3 Rasa Ala Ta Wan (Large) Rp 30,000 (~S$2.95)
Taste: 8.5/10

The heart-warming bowl of porridge comprised three main ingredients: chicken, fish and shrimps, all of which were fresh and tender. Topped with an adequate amount of you tiao (Chinese cruller) and spring onions, it was flavourful and wholesome. Pika's advice: Take note that the price difference between the regular and the large servings is only Rp 1,000 (~S$0.10). Unless you're a very small eater, you should just go for the latter.

Cumi Goreng Lada Garam Rp 51,500 (~S$5.05)
Taste: 8.5/10

A crowd pleaser, the deep-fried calamari kept me wanting for more. The batter was delectably crunchy and airy, coating fresh calamari that wasn't rubbery at all. They were not only seasoned with salt and pepper as the name of the dish suggests, but also topped with garlic chips that made the whole thing aromatic.

Sapi Lada Hitam Rp 59,500 (~S$5.85)
Taste: 8.5/10

I can vouch for the restaurant's rendition of black pepper beef. Coated in thick and luscious black pepper sauce, each of the beef cubes were succulent and thus easy to chew. They were stir-fried with bell peppers, onions and garlic. We mixed the shredded cabbage served on the side with the rest for an added crunch.

Angsio Tahu Rp 44,000 (~S$4.30)
Taste: 8/10

Originating from its Hokkien equivalent, angsio in the Chinese Indonesian context means braising with oyster sauce. It was a comforting dish, having earthy and juicy mushrooms, as well as Japanese tofu slices that were soft, but didn't fall apart too easily. The braising sauce was pretty thick, which I enjoyed.

Melon's Rating
Taste: 8.5/10
Ambience: 7/10
Service: 7.5/10
Overall: 7.5/10

At the point of writing, there are 25 branches across Jakarta.
