SIN: Mid-Autumn 2020 Mooncakes @ Crowne Plaza Changi Airport

Interesting 'kueh salat' mooncake, but...

Mid-Autumn Festival 2020 is around the corner. Have you got yourselves some mooncakes? This season, I decided to try the quartet of snowskin mooncakes by Crowne Plaza Changi Airport, which pays tribute to local flavours. That aside, let's also wish a very happy birthday to Pikachu, who's been an integral part of this food blog!

If you haven't heard of the hotel's selection this year, would you like to guess the flavours before reading further?

Assorted Snowskin Mooncakes S$74.00

Decked out in striking colours are the following: Mango PomeloOrh NeePandan Kaya and Kueh Salat. Overall, I found the snowskin of the first three to be quite soft and not too floury, but not as chewy as I'd like it to be. Pika's advice: Enjoy 40% off when you shop online before the end of the season on 1 October 2020.

Mango Pomelo
Taste: 7.5/10

Before I talk about this particular mooncake flavour, did you know that mango pomelo sago was born in 1984 at Lei Garden, a renowned Cantonese restaurant brand in HK? The lotus paste infused with mango had the right degree of sweetness and was adequately fragrant, but there wasn't enough of the bittersweet pomelo bits to complement the former.

Orh Nee
Taste: 5.5/10

Frankly speaking, the orh nee (Teochew sweet yam paste) flavour was rather disappointing. While the yam paste was somewhat aromatic, it was neither smooth nor creamy, not too mention that it was a tad too sweet for my liking. The filling was studded with only very few boiled ginkgo bits, far from what's shown on the website.

Pandan Kaya
Taste: 7.5/10

The pandan kaya flavour wasn't too shabby, although it'd be even better if they could tone down on the level of sweetness a little bit. Surrounded by pandan kaya paste that was adequately velvety was a pandan-infused coconut custard centre that was denser in terms of texture. It was pretty rich without being cloying.

Nyonya Kueh Salat
Taste: 5/10

For the uninitiated, kueh salat is a traditional Peranakan delicacy comprising glutinous rice streaked with butterfly pea extract and a layer of pandan kaya custard. Alas, the supposedly creative execution by the hotel wasn't good enough. The snowskin wasn't solid enough, while the glutinous rice was dry and didn't have even the slightest chewy texture at all. The pandan kaya paste was the saving grace.

Melon's Rating
Taste: 6/10

I actually managed to get 55% discount as I paid for the mooncakes very early for collection last week.
