SIN: MacKenzie Rex Restaurant [Delivery]
Probably my first time having Halal 'ngor hiang'!
MacKenzie Rex Restaurant is a Halal Chinese restaurant that has been around since 1966. It's located along Prinsep Street in Bencoolen, not far from Place to R.E.A.D, a Greek restaurant that I've previously tried. At the point of writing, it's partnering with three food delivery companies: FoodPanda, Deliveroo and GrabFood.
Ngor Hiang S$4.30
Taste: 7.5/10
Literally meaning 'five spices', the beancurd skin rolls were tasty and crispy, but a tad greasy too. They were stuffed with mainly minced chicken, carrots and coriander, seasoned with five-spice powder that's commonly a mix of Sichuan peppers, fennel seeds, cloves, star anise, cinnamon. The accompanying pickles were refreshingly sweet and sour.
Beef Fried Rice S$7.50
Taste: 6/10
Alas, the fried rice was nothing to shout about. As can be seen from the photo above, the restaurant wasn't particularly generous with the sliced beef and the portion as a whole. Also featuring eggs and frozen vegetables - green peas, corn kernels and carrots - the rice was at least fluffy and not soggy.
Black Pepper Fish Noodle S$8.00
Taste: 7.5/10
The wet noodle in gravy came with an adequate amount of sliced fish and chye sim (Chinese mustard green). To me, there was enough black pepper that not only made the dish pretty fragrant, but also gave my taste buds some kicking. I was hoping for the noodle to be firmer and springier though.
Melon's Rating
Taste: 7/10
I wonder if the name of the restaurant refers to the original owner. Pika's advice: You may want to try their chicken rice, which apparently is one of their specialties.
