SIN: Noodle Thai Thai Kitchen

Where one 'Thai' isn't enough to make you stand out!

When I heard my friend mentioning the name Zhongshan Mall for the first time, my response was, "Is that in Taipei, Taiwan?" He was actually referring to a shopping mall located in close proximity to the historical Sun Yat-Sen Nanyang Memorial Hall between Novena and Toa Payoh MRT stations. I agreed to accompany him to have dinner there at this affordable Thai eatery.

Despite the name, the eatery doesn't only serve noodle dishes, but we ordered two noodle main courses anyway.

Thai Handmade Fish Cakes S$6.00
Taste: 7.5/10

Frozen packaged Thai fish cakes are a big no-no to me. However, since the eatery makes their own fish cakes, I agreed to my friend's request to share them. Topped with peanut crumbs, onions and sweet chili sauce, they were adequately bouncy with quite a delectable red curry flavour. I also noted that they were pretty generous with the finely julienned kaffir lime leaves.

Double Grilled Chicken Signature Jade Noodle (Small) S$6.90
Taste: 7.5/10

The green-coloured noodle, which is said to be dyed using spinach juice, was springy enough for my liking. I was hoping for the chicken to be more flavourful, but I enjoyed the sole crispy wanton and the sous vide egg. The soup served on the side was slightly sweet, having some garlic bits that made it a bit fragrant. All in all, it was pretty good, but not outstanding as a signature dish.

Stewed Beef Noodle Soup (Small) S$7.90
Taste: 8/10

The slightly more expensive rice vermicelli in beef broth fared better than the jade noodle described above. Said to be boiled for over 12 hours, the dark-coloured broth was delightfully sweet. Besides sliced beef and meatballs, there were also radish cubes and kangkung (lit. water spinach) that still retained its crunch.

Thai Thai Milk Tea (Cold) S$3.30
Taste: 7/10

We'd wanted to try some sticky rice with mango for dessert, but since the eatery ran out of it, we decided to skip dessert altogether. Instead, I had a glass of iced Thai milk tea. It was better than average, but I was hoping for it to be thicker and more aromatic. As for the level of sweetness, it was acceptable.

Melon's Rating
Taste: 7.5/10
Ambience: 6/10
Service: 7/10
Overall: 7/10

There's another branch located not too far from Golden Mile Food Centre along Beach Road. Pika's advice: It's interesting that the menu says, "Don't be shy to request for Thai dishes not on the menu. We always try our best to accommodate!" How about giving it a try one day?
