SIN: Pin Wei Hong Kong Style Chee Cheong Fun @ Pek Kio Market & Food Centre

Tasty 'chee cheong fun' worth queueing up for!

Chee cheong fun is a Cantonese dish of steamed rice noodle rolls originating from Guangdong Province in southern China and Hong Kong. I love them doused in soy sauce and sesame oil. Pin Wei Hong Kong Style Chee Cheong Fun at Pek Kio Market & Food Centre has been dishing out lovely ones for more than 10 years.

Here's a very short video clip on how the rice noodle sheet is transferred to an oiled metal surface using a piece of cloth prior to rolling and cutting.

Let's take a look at the two variants that I ordered.

Char Siew Chee Cheong Fun S$4.00
Taste: 8/10

While reminiscing about the territory that's way more controlled by Beijing now, I enjoyed the rice noodle rolls that had a silky smooth texture, although I have to say that they were quite oily. They were chock full of minced barbecued pork, which was leaning towards the sweeter side and thus the savoury mix of soy sauce and sesame oil.

Prawn Chee Cheong Fun S$5.00
Taste: 8/10

I also had the prawn version, which featured enough succulent and rather bouncy prawns. I'd certainly love to have bigger sized ones though. The mildly spicy chili wasn't too shabby, although there wasn't anything to rave about. Also, how lovely it'd be to have spring onions as a topping in addition to sesame seeds.

Melon's Rating
Taste: 8/10

This isn't about patriotism, but I really dislike the dark, sweet sauce served in our local style chee cheong funPika's advice: I've never had chee cheong fun filled with scallops before, and it was a pity that it wasn't available when I dropped by. You may want to try it for S$6.00.
